Recently I was put off by somebody calling me "sir" in a store. My son calls me that sarcasticly sometimes (chip off the ol' smartalec) but when a stranger says it, dammit I feel old.
"I'm (less than) 37, I'm not old!"
Apparently, it could be worse -- I could be a 20-something woman (young lady?) who is sometimes called "ma'am"

Your thoughts, folks? Do ya feel old? Do you look down on the young 'uns in the malls and on the bus and think, "They're so vaccuous, they don't know a thing, they haven't lived, they're so foolish, wasting all their time on pointlessness..."?
A famous quote comes to mind, "Youth is wasted on the young."
Or am I all alone here?
I can take it, if I am... just asking you guys to let me know ;)
I like it when people call me sir. I don't see it as an age thing, but more of a social-rank or something like that. People who's job it is to serve me (waiters, hotel-staff, flight-attendants, etc.) call me sir. Polite people that I don't know often call me sir (eg. "excuse me sir"). Most of the people that call me sir are older than I am, but then I'm a lot younger than you are :)
Ya - sometimes I think back about high-school and stuff, and think to myself damn - I'm old now. But in the grand scheme of things, there's a lot more years ahead of me than behind.
I depends on how it's used, for example:
"Your champagne sir." is ok by me
whereas
"Sir, you're making a scene" is not so good.
Personally, I prefer "M'lord" or "Master of the Universe".

Totally, the way Skeletor ran things reminds me of an overworked undertrained IT manager.
"Arrgh! Nothing get's done when I'm not around!"
-Actual Skeletor quote
It's funny you should bring this up - my birthday was on the 22nd and I have officially hit that mysterious point where I no longer wish to discuss my age. It's not exactly that I dislike the age I am; I'm still pretty young and as far as the people I hang out with are concerned I'm generally next-to-youngest if someone hasn't brought their kids. I don't feel particularly old either (maybe wearied on occassion but not really old).
Perhaps it is a bit related to the concern that when I hit a certain age people will feel they can rightfully switch to calling me ma'am instead of miss. Woe betide those who call me ma'am at this point though.
Yes, ma'am! Err... miss
And don't visit the southeast USA. Everyone is ma'am and sir, even if you just turned 18.
