So many editions to choose from!

Vista Coffee Flavour

Vista Tweed Flavour

Vista Donut Flavour

Vista Caffiene Flavour

Vista Maximum Extreme Butterscotch Flavour

Vista Carrot Flavour

I'm a-gonna be wondering next how much the Home Premium version will cost, and whether it will be really worth it within 5 years to switch from XP.

From a consumer point of view; this is a fantastic idea.  From a Support Analysts point of view; this is retarded.

Im curious about...

Vista Home Premium

Vista Ultimate

...i believe the Ultimate includes all the WMC stuff, and if thats the case its the one i want.

Actually I think this is designed to @%&# with the customers even more. People usually make better choices when they have fewer options. That being said outside of corporate and geek circles I think most people will just use whatever came with their computer.

True, but i thought and still do, that the release of XP Home was just about the smartest thing they could do at Microsoft, its the perfect OS for my parents and theyve never had an issue, i use XP Pro as i need the enhanced network functionality.

Most machines will come shipped with "Home Basic" im sure and "Home Premium" will be a typical Dell Add-On.

I like the merging of products the most.  The Ultimate edition as far as i can tell is gonna be be "XP Pro" "XP Tablet" "XP MCE" etc all in a single edition.  I think its the way to go.

Home premium should have the MCE functionality in it, possibly tablet as well.

Really - I think it's a good idea, and will probably make things easier for support staff - not harder.  Don't think of the current XP as only 2 versions (home and pro) - there is also Tablet, MCE, and Starter editions of XP.  Now, instead of having all these different editions for different device types, there are just Home and Business, and within each of those, there are 2 or 3 levels of functionality.  As for starter edition - chances are none of us will ever see a copy, just as I bet none of us has ever seen an XP Starter edition disk.

Biggest problem I have had between Home and Pro.. or more to do with computers on a DOmain or off a domain is the inconsitant permissions dialoges.. The home version just gives you check boxs for two things and doesn't tell you squat about what groups have permissions.. This makes it hard to share files between computers in a work group unless you override the dialog with the advanced version or stick to the MS Shared Documents folder.. even then if you MOVE files from another folder they don't assume the correct permissiosn and you still have issues.

If "Home Premium" has good network support and the MCE support then thats the version for me.

Darren, you gotta grab the other side to that :)  Apple has done its fair share of "idea lifting" as well.

Sorta true: Jobs copied much of the Mac GUI from Xerox, but it was after having a peek at the research in exchange for some cash or shares or something... There aren't any other really obvious examples of Apple doing that. Nothing like the lack-of-originality that is the [final?] RC for Vista... ;)

Anyway, to add fuel to this flame war ( ;) ) -- tPoSV: "You took our stuff, Bill. You took our stuff, you fooled with it... then you called it your own." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im589uTchKs) :o
^ in all seriousness, though, one of the comments sez... "For the real deal, Check out Woz's letters section. He was there, He LIVED this film. He KNOWS the truth. Plus, he is one of the the most truthful people that has ever graced the computer industry. http://www.woz.org/letters/pirates/index.html (esp. #6 (http://www.woz.org/letters/pirates/06.html)) "

How about the upcoming backup system?

Or perhaps Microsoft announced an uber new desktop search and Apple released on in the next version of OSX?

Apple is even coping the fast user switching in their next version

How does Bill feel about Vista, and its perpetual delays? :D How computers are like bicycles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq5UOSnoQUM%20;)%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3ELooks%20like%20some%20IMDB'ers%20also%20discuss%20the%20Apple/XeroxPARC%20GUI%20issue...%3Cbr%20/%3Ehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168122/board/nest/1146177%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3EAlso...%20%5Burl=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOWpLC-_S6E) -- deep thought by Steve Handey ;)

PS: as to some folks' theory about 5-years-in-the-making VISTA == 5-released-in-that-same-time MacOSX: As Ross Perot would say, case closed. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QdGt3ix2CQ) ;D

QuoteMicrosoft.com Canada has released pricing for Windows Vista. Windows Vista Ultimate is listed at $499 Canadian ... Vista Ultimate Upgrade is priced at $299...

Source: http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=34770

QuoteSingle User        $149.00

Source: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=405B1455&nplm=MA453Z%2FA

So...while we get 5 "upgrades" of OSX for the massive sum of $745.00 Canadian, or we can get 1 of Windows for $300 which brings Windows to about the same in terms of feature sets (if not more).  By the time Vista ships OSX 10.5 will be availableish making that nice sum of $745 = $894.

Gotta love the trolling Mr. Dirt.

Well all I gotta say to that is...

"Developers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drLO_LG0W9w), developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers! Coming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La_u1jPLOIA), coming, coming, coming, coming, coming, coming!" 'Only $99.00!' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=676q1XjfJzc) vs. 'Computers are like bicycles for the mind.' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOWpLC-_S6E) ;)

And as Your Hero said: "The Macintosh is the only machine that really captures people's imagination." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FifG1X0d5fA) ;D

seriously though...

You still have to think differently to buy an Apple computer.

I think the people who do buy them, do think differently. And they are the creative spirits in this world.

They are the people that are not just out to get a job done, they are out to *change the world*.

And they're out to change the world using whatever great tools they can get. And we make tools for those kinds of people.
