How about a fantastical machine that plays music, but could never really exist?

Ati had that as a realtime 3D screensaver at one point... Reminds me of the early days of 3D animation.

I could swear that YTV used to air something similar (and lower rez but no less cool) as an in-between shows clip back when Reboot was in the first season. Or, I might have the predecessor to this animation on a video tape of CG animation downstairs. Could be both!

Yep, YTV did air several of these, I also remember compusmart playing these on the TV's over head when they fist oppened the BIG westend store.

O how times have changed.

Found the screen saver real-time demo.

http://www.ati.com/developer/demos/r9700.html

The realtime version should work on an ATI 9700 or better, I don't remember if the demo does a brand check to only run on ATI or not.

There's a couple of DVDs full of stuff like "Pipe Dream" (like modern updates of the "Beyond the Mind's Eye" series).

Animusic - A Computer Animation Video Album (Special Edition) (2001)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001WNL26 (75 minute DVD)

Animusic 2 - A New Computer Animation Video Album
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CBWPXC (40 minute DVD)

Also it seems a lot of people who bought one of the above on Amazon also bought this:

Caught Between Worlds - A Computer Animation Vision

One of three amazing DVD by this artist, October 9, 2004
Truely amazing, wow this guy is a true visionary. These 3/D anaimations are rich and layered with weirdness in the very best possible way. Better than any Minds eye I've seen and there are three DVD's in the series by Beny T.

Oh, I had a video of "Beyond the Mind's Eye" I bought at the Vancouver science centre way back when.
