One hopes GoW is the second coming of Christ considering the amount of hype.
Well, second coming of Christ perhaps not, but the second coming of Halo might not be too far away. This is what 360 has needed for a very long time, a killer franchise to hang its hat on.
Its a busy November, i have CoD3, R6:V and GoW all pre-ordered and they are all expected to be out at the same timeish

QuoteGears of War is an outstanding technical achievement, but in addition to looking and sounding amazing, it's a seriously awesome action game.
The Good: Stellar graphics reset the bar for what consoles can do visually; great soundtrack and killer sound effects; satisfying gameplay in single-player mode; very addictive online play; best use of a chainsaw in any game, ever.
The Bad: Story could have been a bit more fleshed out; difficulty could have used some slight tuning.
OMG!!!

QuoteEven with the minor faults, Gears of War is easily a contender for game of the year. The graphics, sound and presentation are nearly unparalleled. The gameplay is phenomenal and you'd be hard pressed to find a more complete package. Gears of War has shown what Xbox 360 is capable of. Now it remains to be seen what other developers can do to keep up.
OMG!!!

QuoteI can go on and on, but you really need to play this visual and visceral masterpiece for yourself. When you do, you'll find plenty of minor problems, just like I did...but you can always find reasons not to give a game a 10.
And while I was playing Gears of War, all I kept running into was reasons to give it a 10.
Another reason for me to get xbox 360
Downtown EB "It will be in tommarow"
Downtown Futurshop, "try back in the next day or two" :(
Alright, the game has grabed my attention. But i just fired up Oblivion again and still want to give it a good run. The question is, how long can i keep this game in the package after buying it?
HaHa, im working as fast as I can today so I can not bother working tomorrow and do some Gears of War. Co-Op should be a blast.
Oblivion takes longer then 40 hours (im at 41+ and still have Mage and Thieves Guild yet to finish), im going to finish this game, i just think im gonna have to take a month or so break :) granted I bet im under 10 hours away form polishing it off, its starting to feel a little like "work" though. (Dark Brotherhood starts off very cool, and ends rather cool, but the middle is just brutal (*hint* get the unbreakable lockpick before doing these quests *hint*))
Im at 60+ hrs, and only 3 missions into the main story line, barely into the fighters guild.
But i did get entrance into the mages University, and done a F---Ton of side town quests. Oh and im lvl 27.
Ouch. One of the Main Quest "quests" is to ask all the towns for help to defend Bruma, but all the towns have Oblivion Gates outside them that you need to close. Its basically like 6 hours of agony.
I will admit that i have not done much at all in terms of side quests as they have little value to the main story. Basically Im on a quest for 1,000 achievement points at this point. Im only level 16 though (i wonder why so low compared? even with your 20 hours extra you had to kill a lot of stuff), maybe its because i have both a sword and a mace and switch between the 2 often making my advancements in blade and blut slowing the total growth?
Back on topic, Future Shop might get it in today (either the 1:00 or 5:00 shipment), EB is tomorrow for sure.
Yeah, stupid EB chick. Smokin' crack I think she was!
Went in and asked if I could put money down on one. She argued that the pre-orders were last week so I couldn't do it. I asked if I could put money down on one encase they had extra. She said pre-orders were last week and that she didn't know how many she was getting. I said no matter, let me just put money down on one, and she said she couldn't do that. So I left.
Crack baby!
I finished the Oblivion main story line quite a while back, and recently played it a bit more to get the last few achievements - and my char is lvl 10. I think the dark brotherhood was one of the best quest lines, thieves guild was also fun. The fighters guild was annoying because you had to keep changing places of where to get the next mission (on opposide sides of the world) - hate travelling to a place just to be told "I don't have anything for you, try the other dude". The arena was a ton of fun too - you can do it start to finish in a couple hours if your char is good in combat.
That quest where you have to go around and defend every single town is actually optional. I did do every town (and it did take about 6 hours), but the way it works is the next part when you are actually defending Bruma all the other towns that you helped will have sent guards to Bruma to help you. If you wanna defend Bruma solo you can skip helping the other towns. I'd recommend you bring at least some help, unless you can take a lot of mobs at once by yourself.
Really Cova? I didn't know that, but I could see getting the help being a good thing considering the amount of crap that comes out of that Monster Gate.
I enjoyed the Fighters Guild quest line, the traveling wasn't so bad as I have fast traveled 95% of the time (or i fast travel as close as i can get to something). As for the Thieves and the Mage quest lines Im a little annoyed, i was just looking through a game guide and they appear rather long, not sure when I will get a chance to finish it off.
Well, a different story (yet again) the afternoon shipment at Future Shop was a bust it would appear (nothing on the shelves, a dozen or so gamers loitering), was then told that they get a truck later in the evening around 8 (i was first told 5) and that they would probably have them on the shelves for 10am tomorrow morning. So, as it stands, tomorrow is the big day all around.
Damn after reading the reviews I almost want to snag a copy, and I don't even own a 360.
Managed to take a peak at a few videos that suddenly appeared on the net yesterday.. The game looks kick ass.
Oh yes it will be mine... oh yes!
Well, I scored my copy from EB after all. Thank god i went there now when I had a few moments, the bitch who put my brother and I down put us in for the French version :P The guy switched us to the English and checked the system, the same girl had 5 others down for the French as well. So i think copies of GoW at EB Clairview are gonna be rather thin seeing as they had very few on the shelf to begin with, and now 5 less then that.
Scored mine at the downtown EB at about 10:00am today. Its funny, i walked in and asked for a copy, the tard behind the desk said it wasnt in. So i said "Can i put my name down for one", he said that i have to do it as a pre-order with money down, "fine, here's five bucks" i said. So he processed the receipt and was about to had it to me, just as his co-worker came walking to the till with a stack of GoW in his hand. "Er, i'd like to redeem my pre-order now" i said as the tard EB employee rolled his eyes :D
I got in right when it opened, when I left the line there was like 20 guys behind me, apparently they had about 50 non preorder copies available, so the picking *could* still be good. But then again downtown EB is probably the busiest so I wouldnt hold my breath on it.
We are going to have to get some co-op in over Live. A few achievements are only gettable by playing as the tag along second guy in the campaign.
Got mine at the 137Ave and St. Albert Trail (almost) EB location. Guy had about 10 for sale that weren't preorders. Cova got his there too. Best Buy said they weren't getting theirs until tomorrow.
Well, after giving it about an hour. WOW. The cover system is okay, not as good as R6:V, really forces you to use it.
Running + Gunning = Death Sentence.
Some objectives are confusing, i don't know of its rust, but also extremely challenging.
Graphics are everything people say, absolutely stunning and shows what this generation of consoles is all about. The game has so much polish and so much character. Even the pro-typical space marine is pretty damn cool. Has those cheesy one liners but really fit the type of game it is.
The reload system is pretty slick (rather easy as i already got both reload achievements), and i think it would suit many games.
I havent noticed any sort of frame rate issues, seems rock solid at 30.
What can I say but ^&*^ yeah! What a great game. Only done the first Chapter so far, but man is it an intense game. The reload thing is a bit hard on my small TV (always seem to miss the flash for reload while in a fight as I'm so enthralled on the action in front of me), but I manage to get about every 3rd or so in. I love FPS games with cover. Best addition to FPS in a long time.
Your right Shayne, no cover tactics means death. But its sweet when you do use them. The Satellite weapon took me about 3 tries to figure out before I got it (yeah died 3 times). And man is that revolver powerful if you aim it just right :P. So far only found 2 dog tags... yeah I know I such. But what is reply for if not to better yourself :P.
So far I give this a 10/10 for story and action. Even the vocals aren't bad.
Well bed for me, see if I get more in tomorrow :D.
So much for focusing on Oblivion. I gave it a try with the intent on just a taste to come back to after I made significant progress on Oblivion... that’s not going to happen now, this game blew me away. Couldn’t stop until i finished the first chapter.
Shayne is right by skipping the first difficulty and playing on hardcore, you get double the achievements (since you earn the easy ones at the same time). Things are harder to kill, and MAN did i die a lot. There was this one area where you around that round fountain and the enemies keep coming, but to top it all off there’s a enemy on the turret gun (Man i hate those guys), took me almost an hour to pass.
Cover as mentioned is done really well, which is good because that’s the only way you live :-[
Hip shooting as Shayne put it = death. but like the guy said in the booklet, he was playing paintball and noticed that no one was strafing, jumping around in a circle etc. Everyone was taking cover, peaking around corners, moving from bunker to bunker, and anyone who plays paintball knows running out into the open shooting from the hip is the best way to go down, and it wont take long. GoW feels the same way :D
i love the chainsaw kill in those rare instances when an enemy gets up-close and personal, very satisfying kill. Although, every kill in this game is satisfying, it takes a lot to bring these monsters down and every kill is a satisfying small victory.
Spoiler
I got goose bumps when that big humanoid creature came out grabbed your sergeant Kim and lifted him up by the neck and stuck im with that big blade. But hey you got promoted over it :P
Turn the lights down low and the sound up, its worth it. The game defiantly throws in a few scenes that will make you jump.
HD TV is really showing its goods with this game, i have
never seen a game look this good, not even on PC. There is absolutely no lag what so ever either, and im still outputting in unconverted 1080p, haven’t tried switching to 720p yet to see the difference... if any.
If you haven’t bought this game yet, GO BUY IT! If you don’t have an XBOX 360 yet, GO BUY ONE! and get GoW... NOW!
After shutting the game down, i noticed that my auto downloader pulled down Contra LOL gave it a quick run, MAN i went from playing the Best FPS to date to playing a side scrolling shooter, holy crap, don’t try this at home kids :D
Its amassing how far video games have come in the last 15 years.
Couldn't agree more with both of you two. Its been a very long time since a game just grabbed me from the minute I put it in and loaded it up. As I was talking with Druid lastnight, even factoring in PC, I have not seen a game that looks as good as GoW, only Crysis might come close, but even then to see GoW in action is to question all you know about games :)
Blind firing has helped me a lot, especially if you find yourself pinned down from 2 or 3 directions.
*** SPOILER ***
2 areas that got me hung up for 8-10 deaths in the first chapter are the round fountain area (having to close those 4 insurgent holes) and inside the house their is a guy with a turret to the left and a small elevated shack on the right side (i didn't realize that you could enter that shack and gut the area from above)
*** END SPOILER ***
I hadn't got a chance to finish the first chapter yet, but I know im at the end of it as its a sort of boss battle.
GoW has spoiled me, its going to be tough to compare anything to it.
The last games that I lost myself in was the MoH and CoD games. The stories and intensity of most of those games got to me something terrible. But never would I have thought a futuristic style one would come close to the Halo grip again. GoW is that game. Feels like Halo for the first time all over again.
I still haven't gotten a chance to take my copy out of the shrink-wrap yet - but I plan to be home playing it today pretty much all night once I get home from work. The co-op part does sound interesting, a good co-op game might finally convince me to upgrade to live gold.
Atomic Gamer (http://www.atomicgamer.com/article.php?id=316) gives it 96% and includes some nice high res screen shots for those of us without a 360.
As of right now, Gears of War is the 23rd highest rated game of all time. Not to shabby.
Wow, EA sure hits hard at GoW: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69805 (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69805)
QuoteSpeaking in a panel discussion at the Montr?al Games Summit, Tascan said, "What is Gears of War? I mean Gears of War brings nothing in terms of innovation to the shooter... Like, zero.
3 words for Mr. Alain Tascan: "Need" "For" "Speed". Lack of innovation? Wow.
The guy sort of makes a point, people are gushing over it now but I'm sure in six months the game will be a fond memory for most gamers. From what I've been told there's no story, the action is chase based (like Siphon Filter, MGS or Tomb Raider) and that so far the real attraction is the bot AI and the graphics.

Hah! When I first saw the title "Need For Speed: Carbon", I thought the poster actually meant that it was a carbon copy of previous games... :P Only later did I realize that was the *actual title*.
I'll say this about the NFS franchise, though: some of the NFS releases have had interesting twists... NFS3 was the first with a "Be The Cop" mode and play against other computers (but you had to know their IP addresses). NFS4 had an online play option with a way of discovering other players without knowing their IP addresses. NFS5 was all Porsche and nothing else, with a timeline mode where you start out in the 50s and as you win races the years advance and newer Porsches become available (this is probably my favourite NFS release). NFS7 introduced both riding around in a city looking for races and the concept that you need to impress the other racers; oh, and it added drifting and dragging to the mix. NFS9 added the concept of building a team of racers and having them race with you - you could have a fellow with you who blocks your competitors so you can win, or a fellow who lets you draft, etc. I haven't played NFS9, so I don't know how well this works.
All of the things I listed above were not revolutionary, but they were evolutionary. Need For Speed: Carbon is a lot different than Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit was. But hey, it's still basically a racing game.
In that light, Gears of War is an evolution of the squad-based tactics shooter, from what you guys have posted. It's more realistic, it has a new twist (cover), it has interesting AI (they try to flank you), etc.
I will be the first to admit that GoW isn't that innovative. Its very World of Warcraft like in that they took a lot of features and ideas of other games, wrapped them up into a fantastic package that doesn't really fail on anything.
The story is weak, but the story has been weak in almost every game accept for RPGs, GoW is all about gameplay, and honestly, its game play is just about the best I have EVER played. Its extremely engaging.
NFS is very evolutionary. They do the bare minimum in feature increases from version to version. Underground 1 to Underground 2 was very minimum, Most Wanted added in some cop chases to the Underground game play, and carbon pretty much added nothing accept for a "Canyon" game type and slider controls (similar to character creation) to the cars.
I just don't see how EA can talk about being Innovative.
Hearing about the fun factor is good, more games need to be fun :)
Gears of War is the evolution of Tactical FPS (without you actually controlling the squads actions). Innovative? Well that depends on how you view the meaning of innovative. If your looking for a completely new approach to FPS, then no Gears of War isn't that type of innovation. But was World of Warcraft innovative in the MMO market in the same I just explained? No. But WoW is considered innovative in the sense that it took a pre-existing style of play to the next level. Gears of War is this. It takes the Tactical FPS style of singular play (or co-op) to great heights. What I mean by singular play is that this isn't a Battlefield style game, nor a team/squad based style FPS.
So in my eyes, GoW is innovative. They took the previous ideas and innovations, simplified them, improved game mechanics and reaction, advanced the AI, and took cover based level design to the next step. And then there is the Graphics, which are the most noticeable of all the advancements. This is innovation in my eyes, just as new concepts are also considered innovation.
As for the story, I actually like the story line so far. It's enough to keep me wondering about Fenix's background, and what the hell is driving the war between Humans and what ever you would call what your fighting. Brings me back to the first Halo, where the story is really vague at first. Hopefully it follows up with a decent story once I get through more of the game, but right now I don't think its at all a bad start.

And this is what really appeals to me about GoW. When it really comes down to it, it has all the fancy additions, evolution and graphics, but it is also FUN AS HELL!
Right. I think we all sort of agree here :P As for Alain Tascan, well, he's just complaining that people like a game put out by another company.
Now, Bob Ross' The Joy of Painting, that'll be a revolutionary game thanks to a revolutionary controller... But just because it's a revolutionary game or a new concept doesn't mean that it'll score high on somewhere like MetaCritic.
I think WoW was less "innovative" and more "well executed" than it's competitors (it didn't add anything new, but it did do those things far better than most).
As for GoW, again, from what I've read (so I'm probably wrong) the single player is more like Call of Duty, just with a chase perspective and that you really need to keep your squad with you to give you covering fire and to save your ass (etc). Again just better execution of standard run n' gun FPS.
Call of Duty has better scripting for events that happen while playing, CoD is all about its scripting to make the world feel alive. GoW makes the world feel alive by its second-to-none graphics engine, excellent enemy AI and fantastic bot AI.
I like the odd timbits of DNF humor thrown in. Gives the game attitude, especially when i fail to execute a reload and my gun jams for a few critical seconds. You?re character says "Ah - @%", which is exactly the way im feeling at that moment *and saying out loud myself*
Great execution, Just like WoW, really fun to play. If your going to jump into the genera start here!
I think GoW is quite innovative. I don't know what they innovated, but something changed from previous shooters, cause unlike most of the ones on the market, this one is fun. It is one of VERY few shooters out there where you could believe you are actually there. Not because of excellent graphics or good AI or good scripted events, but because the world behaves properly. I think most importantly, this is the first game I've ever seen where people (and locusts) move around on the battlefield (room you're currently in) in a realistic way, moving from cover to cover. The system they built, not just for taking cover (been done), but moving between cover, out of cover, etc. is totally new and really defines the game. I would call it a cross between a classic FPS and a tactical shooter, and not give it the 'tactical shooter' label that applies to games like ghost-recon, which in my experience is a much much slower game.
And as for EA - they're just trying to shoot-down their competitors, since they can't beat them in game quality. NFS has been the game used as an example in this thread so far to show lack of innovation, but the majority of non-innovation from EA is their sports games. They are virtually the same year after year, they just slightly alter the stats behind the players depending how well a team/player did that year. And to make sure that no-one else actually innovates anything new, they've got exclusive agreements with most professional leagues.
I was going to use Sports as an innovation front, but they sorta have to worry for the Sports to innovate before they can innovate.

Why? We don't wait for real wars to innovate before we can make better FPS's - in fact the next innovation coming to warfare is unmanned stuff, and I'd rather not see that make it to video-games, I still want to control my own character.
Uh. So make up sports?

No, how about finding better ways to make the controls work, without adding so many buttons it is impossible to master.
Or how about making defense mean something in a hockey game instead of focusing completely on offense?

Or how about making defense mean something in a hockey game instead of focusing completely on offense?
Actually in the last 3 years of both ESPN (now 2K6/7) and EA games, a lot of defensive moves have been added, and simple to perform. Diving, kneeling, swinging the stick, calling defensive plays on the fly, exit zone plays performed by AI and shorthanded zone coverage being performed well. So I would say that has been a change as you requested.
The last time EA innovated in Madden was the introduction of the QB cone, a feature I loved and added a great deal of game play, my brother and I are pretty damn good at Madden and this was a feature that really allowed us to play on a higher level. However the community at large hated and preferred the any QB can pass to any WR no matter where they are system of before. EA dropped the feature.
Defense in Madden has a lot of depth (more so on previous gen then next gen).
Sports are really a tough thing to innovate past what we have now in terms of game play I think. A few features can be added hear and there but the game play has pretty much been figured out over the last 10 years.
might as well drop in on this.
Been playing a bunch of GoW when I'm not working, and holy mother f***ing @%!!! It is freakin awesome. I absolutely love the game.
Also been trying some stuff with the only features. The versus stuff is pretty cool, but I love co-op. Not only do you unlock the co-op specific achievements, you also unlock the campaign achievements. If you pass act one of Hardcore in co-op, it also unlocks the supposed "single player" campaign Act I achievement. So you can just go through the entire game on co-op. Pretty damn cool. :)
Assuming that 360friendspot's LiveEye is rather accurate, it took me 10 hours 59 minutes to complete GoW on Hardcore. My brother and I teamed up for Act 4 and 5, and I did 1-3 solo.
*** SPOILER ***
Having completed GoW I can't help but say I'm a little disappointed and that the game comes off as a tech demo. Shows off a ton of engine, the game play is some of the best I have ever done, the sound is incredible, the cut scenes are first rate, but now i find myself wishing a story did exist :P The narrator even gives an almost "to be continued" type message at the end of the final cut scene but I find it hard to care (no attachment to characters or even the quest to save the world).
Overall, it was worth the purchase, and I cant wait for my brother to catch up to me so we can go through it again on Insane difficulty and grab the last of the single player achievements along the way.
Man I don't know how to kill the last dude on my own. DOM just dies, so I don't have a distraction. Man I think the only way to do it is with a partner. Freakin hard by myself, and I'm playing on Casual Diff.
Oh well. I should really take a break anyway.

Sorry I got this to you guys too late. Here is the press release for yesterday: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/g/gearsofwar/20061106-emergenceday.htm (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/g/gearsofwar/20061106-emergenceday.htm)
The final guy on Hardcore was pretty simple. I had a Torque Bow and 4 grenades, so i just shot him with my machine gun, when the birds flew away i shot the Torque Bow, and when he made his way close enough i unloaded all my grenades at his feet and the game was done. Rather anti-climatic.
So what now? Insane?
Would you say its better to go co-op over single?

It is definitely easier on Co-op than single player. Can cover more story faster. I like anything co-op and usually say co-op is always better.

Really? Hasn't been a successful tactic for me. Although I might have missed with all my grenades. Will have to see if I can pull this off tonight. I've died like 50 times already trying to be that SOB.
Co-Op in Gears is a lot easier. My brother and I die a couple times on an area, but we can communicate ways to do it differently and approach the situation more strategically where as a BOT will normally run in and die over and over again.
I will be going through it on Insane with my brother once he finishes off the campaign in Hardcore. Its going to be rough regardless, in a few areas we died 6 or 7 times in Hardcore and barely made it by, I think it will only be more frustrating on a harder setting.
Co-Op is better for sure.
This game is all about the co-op - the single-player is fun, but having a real person you can strategize with and stuff is where the game turns great. I've now completed it solo on casual difficulty (yes, Raam is a bitch), and completed up to the end of act 3 on hardcore in co-op mode. Though part of the reason would be that I've been through it once already, we moved through co-op hardcore a lot faster than I did casual solo. I'm looking forward to finishing hardcore and starting in on insane on co-op - hardcore is still too easy, except the occasional area of frustratingly difficult.
And ya, after the final boss during the little cut-scene it does have the makings of a sequel - I hope it comes a lot faster than the original game, which they were already starting to hype up before the 360 launch a year ago. If we're lucky they can keep the engine almost un-changed and just add a bunch more chapters of content. The only changes I'd like to see are a few minor additions to the controls - a way to prevent taking cover while running (eg. hold X while holding A to run past boxes / through doors), and a way to change what side of cover you are on (eg. move from behind to beside a crate as enemies flank you).
I doubt Epic will follow this game up. If we do get a sequel, it will be farmed out to a 3rd party. Epic will be far to busy over the next 18 months working on other stuff (PS3, PC)
So i got the ultimate follow up game for GoW today, the garden simulator Viva Pinata!

Haw Haw.
Just found this multiplayer video (http://media.putfile.com/GoW-MP-Vid-4), really showing off the cover system 8-) :o
