So if you're really poor and you want to change that, you try to buy something that helps you generate income; say a cow, or an oven to bake pottery in, or something. Or how about a cell phone that you then let others use for a charge? Sure, but wait, you're poor! Banks won't approve you for a loan! Along comes a guy who figures out that the price of a cell phone is actually really low, and he sets up a program where poor people can borrow money (about $100 USD) to buy all the equipment needed for a cell phone, plus a little training. Then all the other poor people can pay to use that cell phone, which actually saves them money because they no longer have to travel to the city to talk to bankers/marketers/relatives...
The guy who thought of this is brilliant! Same as the guy who invented the wind-up battery-powered radio for Africa...
