Title: Supreme Commander
Post by: Melbosa on November 14, 2006, 10:53:58 PM
So yeah I am in the beta right now and I thought I should let you guys know what it is like.

Lazy and I took a look at it today.  Not being a veteran of the original, its quite foreign to me in style of RTS play, but Lazy said it is basically an upgraded version of TA.  You have Mass extractors, mass manufacturers, power stations, and storage for both. You can queue up your construction, use multiple construction units to help with construction and upgrades and let your commander help out as well.  Big addition to SC is Naval units.  You now have hydroplants you can build for power from water and battleships to attack with.  Haven't gotten that far yet into the game, but from what I can see its going to be huge battles.

Side note:  game is multimonitor aware - at least that is what Lazy was telling me.  That's right, you can have 2 different parts of the map on two monitors.  I would guess this is going to be a huge advantage against a person with only one monitor.  I only have one monitor hooked up at home, but might try adding in a second monitor to see what it looks like.

Unit cap is 1000 units max on this one.  So I would say at an 8 player battle, that is one hell of a list of units running on the screen at once (assuming everyone has 1000 units out at once).

Will update you as I get more time into the beta.

I have been looking forward to this game passively.  The last few strategy games (outside Company of Heroes) have left me feeling rather empty, I like some of the ideas that SC, but i was not a fan of TA at all, I was part of the Starcraft crowd.

If you didn't like TA's game style you probably will not like this. Not having played TA for years, I was able to ID the play mechanics instantly in this game.

I'm looking forward to it, especially since that stuff about it requiring Vista and DX10 is totally bogus :)

There is a  Wiki  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Commander) with lots of info on the game already, for those that haven't looked into it much.

BTW, when I say this plays like TA, I mean that in the same way that the Command and Conquer series plays the same and the Age of... series play the same. There have been HUGE advancements and new features, BUT the play style is still there.

Am I correct that this is the game maybe 3-6 months ago we had a pretty active thread talking about it? With like a mega zoom level (both up and down) and nukes? If so, wonder what the thread URL is...

Update:
2 threads, actually...

Yep, this topic was more of an announcement and feedback based on the beta. Nice to dig up the old threads though as they cover a few things.

Cool, glad I could help those who only recently heard of it... Sounds like it might have actually lived up to the hype (for those who enjoyed TA, especially).

Well we will have to wait and see.. Only a small sample of the game is included in the beta.. I only had a small chance to observe the gameplay.

An RTS can live and dye based on the unit balance alone.

Looks like this week they will be releasing a massive amount of Beta Keys.  Check around to see if you can get one.  I just got an email from FilePlanet on this.
