Title: Reviewing Virtual Console Titles, XBL Arcade Games, etc
Post by: Shayne on November 19, 2006, 02:42:32 PM
WTF is with Gamespot and IGN reviewing these Virtual Console Titles, XBL Arcade Games that came out originally 10-15 years ago?  On Gamespot they just reviewed Altered Beast (5.2), F-Zero (8.0) and Sonic (7.3) all on the Wii, much the same as they reviewed Street Fighter, Pac Man, etc from XBL.

I just don't understand how you could compare a game like Pac Man to Gears of War and a simple 10/10 rating system does that regardless if its meant to.  Yup, according to  Gamespot Pac Man is 3/4 as good as Gears of War.  And F-Zero is almost as good as the brand new Zelda game

I just don't see the need to review classic games.  Original XBL Arcade titles, or Virtual Console titles, sure why not.  however if Nintendo expands the Virtual Console Library to 500+ are they going to review them all?  again if they are N64 game?

Heck another I sorta stumbled upon, Doom got a 7.3 on Gamespot, so if you are looking for a pretty good FPS, it might be a wise choice.  *shakes head*

They should put these under a different review listing maybe.  Like Wii VC, and Xbox 360 XBLA

worst part is these are direct ports of the old console versions.. There should already be plenty of older reviews that people can dig up.

Rampage.. duh yes it is repetitive game play, so is pac man and frogger! that is all there was to many of those games!

It bugs me that the scale has no real scale.  The graphics of F-Zero is a 7, so are the graphics for the Wii's Call of Duty.  Heck according to Gamespot you should buy F-Zero instead of Call of Duty.

Now they have a gamerankings page for it when they already do...

LOL, and yet it is not only still fun for some of us who plopped lotsa quarters in the arcade to see the next city and the next city... but it's also fun for the new generation (i.e. all 3 of my kids :o ) -- oh and the 2 sequels are even better (fancier graphics, more "3D" environment, extra bonus stuff to find to get extra moves etc.)

Thanks for the reminder about why the "Wii" is gonna be the kickbutt game system for the 30-something retro-gamers with kids: cuz you can re-experience your arcade/NES/SNES Wonder Years, *with your own kids* ;D

I figure they're spitting out these virtual console title reviews to keep up their image of trying to cover everything that's coming out. If they didn't there would probably be at least a few mutterings about how Gamespot/IGN is "ignoring" the virtual console/arcade. Even if the virtual console games are just re-releases it's super easy to just spit out a quick review of a game you've already played. So why not?

And as for numeric scores, well those just remind me of Spinal Tap and the amp that "goes to 11". It's one more so it must be better!
Yeah, numbers can easily deceive and misrepresent. It's better to read the review, take a look at the screenshots, and see a few clips of the gameplay. There have been a couple times where I saw the gameplay on a game and realized the game just wasn't my taste. Saved me time and money.
