Now I have a question: what resolutions are HD-DVD and Blu-Ray?  Am I right in thinking they're 720p and 1080p, respectively?  Or are they both 1080p or both 720p?

Sorry it's not apples to apples* (the Blu-Ray specs are in comparison/contrast to HD-DVD) but maybe this will help...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD-DVD#Video
"The HD DVD format supports a wide variety of resolutions, from low-resolution CIF and SDTV up to HDTV formats such as 720p, 1080i and 1080p. All movie titles released so far have had the feature encoded in 1080p, with supplements in 480i or 480p."

*But this is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HD_DVD_releases
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Blu-ray_releases

^ Looks like around 125-150 titles for each format, with Blu-Ray having a lot more "confirmed, coming soon" titles.

CES is just around the corner.  Make or break for HD DVD I'm afraid.  If none of the studios exclusive to BR go neutral or if Universal goes neutral its doom for the better format (opinionated).

Duel format players are looking to debut from major manufactures but I've read on a couple sites that the initial few players will be more then buying each device separately.

Should be interesting, I will update this topic if anything juicy comes out of CES related to this topic.

Time Warners TotalHD disc is unveiled.  It does have a killer app..."When will see LOTR in this format, they are working on it now and are determining a release date."

They also give a lot bleak numbers for the HD DVD format in that presentation.  As the only company producing on both platforms I'm rather inclined to believe their projections
