With outstanding performances and revealing interviews Before the Music Dies takes a critical look at the homogenization of popular music with commentary by some of the industry's biggest talents like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, Erykah Badu, Branford Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt and more. Using historic footage the film looks at the evolution of American music and the artists who created it and pulls back the curtain (in a very creative way) to expose the sad truth behind today's "artificial" music stars. "The reality is that superficiality is in," says Marsalis. "And depth and quality is kind of out."

It's a fairly straightforward opinion. Pop music is bland, repetitive and dead from a creative standpoint.
Ah, so "popular music" is a genre?
"pop music" means "Popular Music" from what I can tell, and if that's the case I gotta disagree with you Mr.A. While I agree with your opinion that its "It's a fairly straightforward opinion. Pop music is bland, repetitive and dead from a creative standpoint." you cannot argue that it sells like crazy and as such can't really be dead. I would say that pop music has evolved.
If pop music actually is popular, then by definition it isn't dead. Of course, that doesn't mean its any good, just that a lot of dumb americans like it.
