Title: They can hack your router!
Post by: Thorin on February 16, 2007, 02:12:11 PM
http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2007/02/16/tech-routervulnerabilty-20070216.html

Home routers at risk of attack?  The headline caught my eye, but it turns out they're just stating the obvious - if you don't change the default password of your router and then visit a page that loads a java app that accesses the default IP for your router type it can log in and manipulate your router.  Duh.  Which is why router firmware should be written to have no password set and to intercept the first attempt to access the 'net and *require* that a password be set.

Of course, that's easier said than done...

Some people will NEVER open the web interface because they do not have to.. making it an extra step would make some people claim.. IT's too difficult.

Well, I didn't say "open the web interface", I said interrupt the first request for an outside resource and pop up a web page where the user can set the password.  This page can include a quick bit of information about why it's important and that the user will not be able to access the Internet until the password is set.  Although there may be a few users who'll still refuse to set the password, I think it'll be a very low number.

Now if only people wouldn't give away their passwords for a chocolate bar :(

Sorta OT, but its about routers...

My new DLink router was constantly rebooting one day. every few minutes, and I don't even use it most weeks. I hear the model I have and the firmware I have, will reboot upon overheating, but it was barely warm. Might have to take it back to mem express.

I have the BEST luck with hardware.
