Obviously it's not the solution for every company, or even most companies, but it is an alternative.
I think the only APP they have right now is the GMAIL for domains service.. I don't think anyone is really heavily using the calendar/spreadsheet/word processor for busness.
I could see GMAIL for domains as an excellent option for many small or medium size businesses. It is one of the few apps where if your internet connection is down it wouldn't work anyone.
It is a little different for large corporations, even if the internet connection is down, internal email is still important and flows.

Google has adopted Google Apps
They even use it themselves. Yay! Now they better put some
serious effort into security for the whole suite... Oh yes, and figure out what to do if the internet connection is lost; which does happen, and which brings all productivity to a screeching halt if all the apps require the connectivity.

To replace desktop apps offline support is a must.. Even with our 100% routing SLA on our corporate interent connection, there is nothing you can do about all the hops between your ISP and Google.
I can turn these options on for our own Google Domain for RW, but at the moment the Google Apps isn't there (Calendaring and Messaging is though). We are evaluating this option for our students at NAIT, both as an email provider and as a tool set for them at home to use. And because we are an educational institution, its free for us (have that in writing from Google themselves - something to do with them starting up in Standford University as a project and wanting to give back to the educational sector as a thanks).
