interesting summary of how to take advantage of AJAX in ways that help User Interfaces do what they are supposed to do (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9712a.html) -- make it easier for data-hunters to seek what they are on the hunt for, or at least make it easier to scan (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9710a.html) for the precise nuggets they care about.
-part of "Demystifying Usability" (http://experiencedynamics.blogs.com/site_search_usability/), an excellent alternative to the demagoguery of Jakob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakob_Nielsen_%28usability_consultant%29) for anyone who keeps up on "[web]useability (http://www.designbyfire.com/?p=4)" theory... ( also worth reading, and timely: Multitouch Interfaces (http://experiencedynamics.blogs.com/site_search_usability/2007/06/multimodal_desi.html) , What *is* Design? I have observed that usability takes a back seat to consistency.
You can write an app that looks like butt and have happy users as long as their UI is consistently horrible in the same way throughout.
