Title: makin' us proud: the joke is on Mike Myers

...formerly of Canada, but I don't think we want him back after this do we?

Once in a while there is a movie so bad that it takes you to a place beyond good and evil and abandons you there, shivering and alone.

ugh (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10008757-love_guru/). Hey Mike, ummm... Listen, here's a secret: Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks and Robin Williams and Bill Murray and other comedic giants have figured it out, you gotta push your limits baby, take a chance and play some dramatic and/or thriller roles, prove you're more than just a silly goofball who people have grown tired of... Oh well, it was a fun ride, I'm sure... Good investments over the years, I hope?

Let's not pussyfoot around: The Love Guru is an atrocious, idiotic 88 minutes of anti-entertainment.
Yes, yes, we get the idea... No need to be mean. Oh wait, I just watched the trailer. MEAN ON, please!

Lets not forget, Austin Powers bit it in reviews, initial release, etc, but yet made it big in the box office once word-of-mouth started about it.

I'm not going to judge until I see it myself.

4th place in its opening weekend? Even the THIRD in the Austin Powers series did way better than that, and many of us Myers fans were already tired of the series at that point ;)

I have a feeling Mike will go the way of Eddie Murphy, doing voice acting and Daddy Daycare-ish roles... :sniffle:

Oh, and "word-of-mouth" is the *reason* most people were cautious of the film; a lot of those who saw previews were underwhelmed, to put it mildly. The Zohan is probably a better film, by the sound of it. Yikes.

"word-of-mouth" enough for ya?  :(

Nope.  People as a general rule are like lemmings, and follow each other off a bridge if the guy in front does the same.  Reviews are similar (including originals on IMDB by joe-public).

Until any one of us sees it, I reserve judgment.

Herded and dashed off cliffs by demented Disney documentarians?

Fair enough, I'm pretty sure the buzz on this one is bang on though. Not every film he makes is gonna rock (Wayne's World 2 anyone?) I would say if you haven't seen Iron Man you'd better go, in fact leave now and go see it.

If you really want some comedy, go rent "A Shot in the Dark" (1964). The BEST Pink Panther film, recently released on DVD.

If you've seen Iron Man, go see Kung Fu Panda.  Sure, it's short, sure, it's a kids' movie, but it's actually pretty entertaining, the fight scenes are proper kungfu-movie choreography, and Jack Black's a funny voice-actor.

Jack Black is one of my favourite comedians, it's on muh list, right after The Incredible Hulk.

D00D! See KFB before TIH!!!!!!!!!

I am sincere when I pull strangers aside in the mall and say "If you hate kids animated films, SEE THIS FILM. If you hate kung fu movies, SEE THIS FILM. If you hate Jack Black, GET OFF YOUR ASS AND STILL GO SEE THIS FILM, I MEAN IT!"

It's that good. One of the best Kung Fu films I've seen, and a few of those were Jackie Chan un-translated originals...

I can picture this film being on the TV in the background in an Office Space sequel. Mkay? ;D

and PS: it's not short by any normal measure, however it's quite a bit more brief than oh-my-god-what-happened-in-that-third-act Finding Nemo, for comparison's sake. And within 3 minutes you actually stop picturing Jack Black doing the voice; you see only the characters onscreen. I completely forgot "Tigress" was Angelina, for example ... although James Hong (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0393222/filmotype), I totally called it the moment I heard his voice... That guy is more prolific than Walken (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000686/filmotype) and Buscemi (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000114/filmotype) combined!  :o

Ummm but I like cartoons and kung fu and Jack Black.

In fact, if they made an animated "Nacho Libre" I would @%&#ing lose my mind.

In that case, umm... GO SEE IT. ;)

Oh, and you enjoyed the Nacho? Hmmm.. dare I ask, "Pick Of Destiny": thumbs up or down?

...asked by a guy who got hooked on, and now has the DVD of the entire series of, Tom Goes To The Mayor, almost entirely because of the first, "bear traps" episode (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425720/epcast).

I saw Iron Man, Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda, and Chronicles of Narnia recently, and out of all of them I enjoyed Iron Man the most.

Kung Fu Panda was good, enjoyable, and funny, but you know I think Shrek was a better film.  Again though this would be my second choice.

Indiana Jones I'd pick next; although I still find Last Crusade the best movie of all 4.

Narnia I'd pick last. Narnia is about as good as the first one; the special effects and CG are up there - but I haven't been seriously wowed by either of the Chronicles movies.  Maybe because LOTR spoiled it for me.

All-in-all, the four movies are worth seeing IMO.  I just can't preach the high praises that DD gives to KFP.

Nacho is one of my favourite films for a lot of reasons.

Tom Goes to the Mayor is... an acquired taste. I like it, but I also like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sons of Butcher. Which are about as far from normal and "tasteful" as you can get.

Agreed. Huge fan of ATHF here as well... haven't seen Sons of Butcher, but a whole lotta the Adult Swim stuff hits a sweet spot in this guy, for some twisted reason... Must be a buncha other 30-somethings writing those shows that grew up watching Mel Brooks and ZAZ and SCTV and PBS britcoms ;)

Pretty much bang on. Andy Merrill and I are scarily similar in both taste and weirdness...

Damn, now I wanna watch Sealab again...

Williams Street (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_Street) is the modern equivalent of Looney Tunes.

Well, they used to be, their newer stuff really stinks (IMHO). Sort of like WB in the early 90s and then again in the early 2000s.

Dang. I kinda was hinting at that, how back when they had nothing riding on Big Time Success, they could experiment and have fun and make some memorable I.P. that could be mined for years and years... then over time they became a Megacorp Business just like anything good and inventive always does...

So I presume your PVR collection of WS material has plenty of stuff that has been watched-once-ready-to-be-written-over? ;)

Well, I have several DVDs and a lot of SGC2C rips (since they haven't released anything past season 3 because of legal crap).

So back on topic, I finally saw this one with the GF on Thursday.  While it wasn't an Austin Powers flick, it was funny.  We enjoyed the humour and rehashed joke style of the Austin Powers movies.  While not completely original, it was by no means as bad as the critics were saying.

Just my thoughts...
