Title: The Palm Mojo Application Framework
Post by: Mr. Analog on January 09, 2009, 10:29:18 AM
As some of you know, Palm announced a new iPhone competitor at CES yesterday (and if you missed it: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/244962/palm-announces-killer-phone.html) to me though beyond the phone itself the more interesting news is the Mojo Application Framework.

QuoteThe Palm Mojo Application Framework

Palm WebOS applications are easy to write using Mojo, a new application framework based on the HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript standards that web developers already know and love. WebOS applications are installed and run directly on the device at native speed and have access to a wide range of device services.

I'm very excited about what Palm is saying here because of my recent experiences developing rich AJAX functionality through open frameworks rather than working with clunky proprietary libraries. This could make building apps for MOJO very easy.

On a personal note, I've been looking for a reason to pick up some HTML5 skillz, sharpen some of my JSON knowledge. Making widgets for this platform might just be the hobby project I've been looking for.

The SDK will be an offshoot of ECLIPSE and Palm will be working on it's own app store (much like Apple's I suspect). Interesting stuff!

You may be interested in a number of products, like the HTC Touch Pro and a variety of Crackberry devices :)

As if I wasn't excited enough:

Mojo uses Dojo!

It will be interesting to see what kind of performance the device has. This type of internal webserver java API is probably more than enough for form based applications and multimedia fart apps, but can they build 3D apps or something like SimCity on it? Are they targeting blackberry users or iPhone users?

Well, apparently they are going with HTML 5/AJAX framework to keep loaded resources low and claim to be writing the renderer with performance in mind. For 3D stuff I'm sure they'd have to resort to a plugin or something.

Darn! There's no posting about Mojo-Dojo on Hofo or I'd have the perfect basis for a "Yo Dawg".

As far as Palm devices go this one doesn't look like as much like it craves Baby Ruths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goonies) (I'm referencing Sloth from The Goonies).

Join me in the slide-out keyboard revolution Darren. It's BLISSSSSSSSS*.
