Title: Have we caught up to military sci-fi?
Post by: Thorin on April 17, 2009, 11:32:30 AM
Is it just me, or does this picture look like it's from Aliens or Starship Troopers or somesuch other mil-scifi show?

It's from a story about how Kandahar Airfield will have a bunch of new airplanes and helicopters stationed at it: http://www.montrealgazette.com/Afghan+airspace+more+crowded/1507086/story.html (http://www.montrealgazette.com/Afghan+airspace+more+crowded/1507086/story.html)

By the way, did you see the dog?

Man that's almost exactly like a shot out of Starship Troopers, only they need slightly cooler looking helmets.

Also I can't help but notice the very distinctive white patch under that german shepard's jaw. I don't think I've seen colouring that pronounced before though I've seen plenty of german shepards in the past.

FYP. I absolutely loved the tongue-in-cheek style of the movie, but the book was completely different (and excellent, natch, it's RAH) and the "suits" were not just helmetted-fatigues-with-gadgets. They were freakin' huge, more like what Ripley got into at the end of Aliens. But with extra-jumpy magic shoes.  8)

Okay, my sentence included the phrase "mil-scifi show", which naturally excluded any book as a "book" is never called a "show".

Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roughnecks_Starship_Troopers) did a much better job of portraying the equipment from the books, although I don't remember just how big the individual powersuits were.  Also, did you know there's a Starship Troopers 2 and 3?

As for the picture, I think this is in the back of a LAV-3 or a Stryker, but I really don't know.

oops, sorry for giving the wrong impression. Not a criticism, of course.

Just, sadly, a LOT of people have seen film "adaptations" and "interpretations" of literary source material... without knowing how much was changed in the visuals based on the director/screenwriter's flawed vision (compared to the source).

Heck, some people probably saw "Watchmen" without knowing there was a comic ;)

And I've heard that about Roughnecks, by the way... perhaps one weekend I'll take the risk of watching the whole series in one sitting ;D

I wouldn't get your hopes up DD.  I've watched all 3 and only the first one was really worth the time... IMO.

I think he's referring to the CGI series that I wiki-linked in my post...  There's six campaigns, and I would be surprised if you watched them and said only the first one is worthwhile, as most people think the first campaign is a bit lame (being on Earth's Moon 'nall).

I saw part of Roughnecks on TV once, it looked interesting, big power armour / mech suites and all.

OH sorry, missed the Roughnecks part.  I was referring to the Movies obviously.

I still refuse to believe in the sequels.
