I read the entire article, and I gotta say the ending paragraph is wonderful:

Quote
That doesn't matter, according to David Nagel, an engineer at George Washington University in Washington DC. Superconductors took 40 years to explain, he points out, so there's no reason to dismiss cold fusion. "The experimental case is bulletproof," he says. "You can't make it go away."

How very true - sometimes it takes a long time to figure out exactly what is causing an effect.

And like that "Outer Limits" episode pointed out, often times the "discovery" occurs in multiple locations almost simultaneously, "when the science is ready"...

And as David Burke pointed out in his series Connections ideas often spring up in parallel because the right tools and motivations are around at the same time.

Connections (I II and III) ROCKS.

I think a lot of the time it happens because one team finds out something interesting and several other teams start up working on trying to prove/disprove/extend the idea at the same time. In the end, its how science works.
