I was unaware that expensive cameras could record the coordinates of where a picture was taken, and that those coordinates would then be recorded in the image.

Geo-tagging (recording those coordinates into the image) is a great idea so long as the geo-tag is revealed only to those you're willing to share that information with.
Quite a lot of information is embedded in digital images, at first simple things like datetime, speed and shutter settings but now there is so much more.
Scary eh?

Every iPhone does this by default.
But luckily there aren't that many iPhones out there.
And luckily there aren't many non-techies who have iPhones, who end up posting tons of these pictures on their social network pages.
And luckily there aren't many of those non-techies sharing all these insights into their personal lives with tens of thousands of strangers, without realizing it...
the exif data is stripped when you post to Facebook, however flicker reads it and let's you choose if it is shared. iPhone is the most common camera in flicker if I recall.

It wasn't lost on me.. I was simply replying with some specific information related to the comment... IE oddly enough Facebook does not expose this data.

Kinda sucks that you can figure out where people live and what their travelling routines are by simply scanning the hidden data in the pictures from their Flickr stream.
