...but this time it's intentional.
"Knight and Day", never heard of it, but apparently it's surprisingly good (or at least, not bad) -- see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1013743/usercomments -- and it's at the cheap theatres, kids are bored, so wish us luck!
one review said "This movie about an improbable romance (think chick flick) growing during the course of a flight from (in)justice sort of film is in fact largely a spoof of the James Bond genre, and a very good one at that" so I hope that's true... tbh I'm mored worried about cringing when Cameron Diaz is on the screen, more than Cruise ;)
That is one I wanted to check out as well. Ever since seeing Cruise in Tropic Thunder as a crazy guy, thought Knight and Day would be more of that.
Let me know how it is DD.
Glad to say it rocked.
It succeeded on the "action movie" level, at times reminding me of the spirit of the Bourne movies.
But also as a slightly-silly rom-com, it worked too. There's quite a few winks to the audience who have seen Cruise movies, esp. Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky and even Risky Business, but subtle enough to not make the "spoof" degree of comedy veer into "camp". Also, Cameron Diaz redeems herself in the last half, she actually shows some comic timing -- and makes a slight joke reference to her Charlie's Angels role.
I would recommend it as a rental, it's escapism, but not pure popcorn. The storyline itself is not completely formula either, i.e. the "bad guy" is sorta hinted at early if you've seen any recent action films (esp. within the "[rogue] spy" sub-genre) however the way they introduce the initial characters, and bring them together, and what happens after you THINK the conflict is mostly resolved, all that was pretty unique and creative imo.
I'd give it an 8/10, believe it or not -- and it would have been a 9 if there were more laugh-out-loud comedy moments, instead of just big-smile comedy moments. But the action and story were better than I expected so it all balanced out.

He's definitely gonna remind you of his moments in Jerry Maguire when he's kinda "crazy", but never quite the over-the-topic insanity of his Tropic Thunder cameo. Which is fine, considering the movie's subtle degree of comedy it was going for. But he does a really good job of convincing you of his character's genuineness, and not just Tom Cruise As Secret Agent On The Run From His Bosses (which is kinda how the first Bourne movie felt at times, imo the Jason Bourne character was less developed than "Roy Miller" in this film).
PS: strangely, my 9 year old daughter kept saying things about the Tom Cruise character that she lately has been saying about "Edward" from the Twilight "saga", so I guess "he's still got it" lol.
