Double sided Velcro strips are also handy, but probably harder to come by for lazy IT people ;)

In general for arranging cables I use zip ties, though I'm all out at the moment and have to buy more at some point.

I think just wrapping it around the player is much easier, and makes you look much less dorky.

The trouble with many players is that the cord will creep up to the controls so if you want to make adjustments after the first 30 min or so you have to push the wrapped cable around. But yes, this is "fanny-pack" level dorky and easily solved by buying headphones with an appropriate length cable on them (or a jacket with a pocket for when you aren't using them).

People that festoon themselves with gizmos probably really dig this idea though.

I shall dub it the "geeky gaffer" look.

and makes the thin wires go "snap" eventually. <-- reason I even found that LifeHacker page :)

How tight did you have them wound?

-OR-

How sharp are the corners on your MP3 player?

(urge to say "tune in next week to find out" and have Rocky the flying squirrel zoom past)

it's cumulative, headphone wires are thin metal, eventually the "bend one way, bend the opposite way" will cause flakey connectivity and eventually snap goes the metal. hence my desire to find alternatives to the "wrap around the player" method of storage.

I can honestly say I have never had this happen. I've had connections to cheap earbuds wear down at the earbud terminal but never from over-winding.

The only place headphones have failed for me is at the buds or the jack. I have never just had the wire fail... How tight do you wind the cables?

If I play with a headphone cable enough I will start breaking wires inside. But usually the plug goes first.
