Title: The value of a Costco membership has diminished?
Post by: Lazybones on December 06, 2010, 01:17:25 AM
Just renewed my membership after I lapsing for two years.

You can still get stuff in bulk for cheap but some other departments seem to only be on par not deals now.

- looked at tvs and found prices on par with walmart
- looked at the minimal clothing section, again only on par with walmart
- looked at some folding tables and chairs, actuall found much cheaper at Canadian Tire
- video game systems and games appeared to be fairly average in price.

That and you still can only pay cash or Amex.

Ahhh yes, but you have one advantage in BC that we don't in Alberta (and don't need mind you).  You can ask not to pay PST if you are a Business Member, indicating that the items are for resale.

Here we just get in 1H earlier with a Business Membership.

That aside am I right? It uses to be almost a given that if Costo had a TV it was cheaper, same goes for most of the electronics etc... Just seems like the gap between normal retail and Costco is much smaller now.

Also the biggest surprise was that Kirkland diapers are no longer the cheapest... Walmarts now beat them out at a cost of 0.221 / unit vs 0.238 for Kirkland.. Although there could be a quality difference.

When Costco has a good deal on something, it usually is a very good deal.  But if you assume that most things at Costco are a deal, you usually assume wrong.  There are somethings I find just better at Costco (in Alberta at least): Meat cuts are usually fantastically priced for what you get, Kirkland water, Kirkland burgers, Salmon Fish, Rye Bread.  Those are some items I know is worth my Costco membership.

But yeah, compared to when they first started, they aren't the one-shop-deal-stop they used to be.  But then again, they weren't that for everything at the beginning either.

The one in Sherwood Park has a great meat selection and the prepared foods are to be reckoned with, otherwise I just shop at the downtown Sobey's
