Title: Thanks - Netflix now I am hooked on Farscape
Post by: Lazybones on January 10, 2011, 09:36:39 PM
Yes, I know I am a little late on this one, but in my defence I didn't always have the cable channel it was on when it was airing and from what I recall the timeslot was always bad, even when it was rerun on other networks... I had seen one or two episodes before but never got into it...  Having whole seasons to watch and cue up on demand makes it too easy.

Man, I've had the FEVAH since the fourth episode or so when I first started watching (back in it's ugly timeslot on Space). It's one of the few series that just kept getting better and better over time and actually used a large ensemble cast to it's advantage.

I've been trying to buy the DVD box sets but they are impossible to find last I looked (and expensive when you do find them), I eventually got the whole series but I'd sure love to see this series in HD (which won't happen according to Brian Henson http://www.timtoon.com/2009/11/07/farscape-will-not-be-released-in-high-def/ ).

I've yet to see a Sci-Fi series with more heart to it.

The picture quality on Netflix is good. I think the bigger problem is the aspect ratio since the shots would all be bracketed for SD, trying to change the aspect ratio with cropping and panning would be similar to what happened to normal movies when recut to SD from widescreen

Yeah, that is annoying eh. I have so many videos that were 4:3 and there's just nothing I can do about some of them...

Ahhh very cool! Watch the characters as they evolve, it's pretty amazing during the course of the series.

Up to about S1E12 now, we where discussing the characters last night and we both thought that Criton was the most flat character in the show despite being the main character.

Also my current favourite character is Pilot.

I look at Chriton was the character that the viewer becomes, though they do flesh him out later, basically we observe everything through him at first.

Well Netflix ended up getting Season 4 just in time, but I ended up needing to find a copy of Peacekeeper wars.. We have now watched them all.

Pilot is still my favourite character however they didn't get his voice right in Peacekeeper wars...

Yeah, Lani Tupu sounded more like Crais than Pilot in PKWars...

Looking back, I really wish they had used widescreen right from the beginning HOWEVER it still stands up today as a decent program to me.

Agreed.  My HD rips are will the big black bars :D.  I have been trying to catch a Blu-Ray set in stores, but always seem to miss it.  Might just order online.

If you see it online order it, they did a recent reissue box set (2010?), get it while you can, because once they're gone if it's like the previous printings you'll have a really hard time getting your hands on the whole thing (I know I did, for years I only had a few episodes).

I'm not sure about you guys but NETFLIX was damn slow over the last couple of weeks (Olympics streaming ? I dunno), having HD discs whenever you want to watching something is pretty handy, especially if it's a show you go back to over and over (well, with Farscape it's like an annual thing for me at least :) )

I want to support the series with revenue. While Netflix does give a portion, I would guess (but have not looked up for facts) that a physical purchase would net profit the series more.

Plus all the extras that Netflix doesn't offer which the Blu-Ray has.

You WILL NOT regret it, it's the best. Up there with Star Trek

Some of the best character evolution I've seen in televised fiction as well

And Jim Henson puppets that get kicked, smacked, thrown around and have sex.  Jim HENSoN!  Funny tidbit: Farscape was the first series to actually have a TV series actor physically interact with a puppet on a regular bases in real scenarios - like punching, kicking or throwing around.

On a scale of CSI thru BreakingBad, you would give it... ?

I think that's why a lot of the day to day effects worked so well, I mean the age of the CG shows a lot for some scenes but all the practical effects (puppetry, pyrotechnics, etc) have really held up.

Hard to believe the series started FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Lol!

Speaking of Jim Henson, his first muppet shows were rather adult. It wasn't till he tamed it down that it went anywhere...

I'd wager a milon of credit of those 15 cycles you would never have a microt of boredom for every arn spent watching these episodes.

Yes, before Battlestar Galactica redid it (although the original did have one new word made up "frack" later changed to "frak" in the remake) Farscape imagined new words for many things in the show, and not just swears: http://farscape.wikia.com/, http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Glossary_of_Farscape_terms
