the wave looks like some disaster movie... and it's just a "small" one of 30 feet.

worst quake in 140 years, but only 1000 expected dead, which says a lot for improved engineering technology and quake-proofing.
That was the news this morning. I received a phone call from a concerned relative at 5:50am since there where some Tsunami watches for the coast here. From what I understand there where some swells as a result but nothing scary on our coast.
wow, California coast hit by 8 foot (not just 3 foot) waves:

Ya, we were talking about that in class, apparently, where the tsunami hit on California, there is 1 dead.
1! They all knew it was coming, and would have had time to evacuate. So it surprised me!
Apparently he was video taping the wave coming in, and it took him back out to sea, and was never found, and assumed dead.
I'm still in shock over this, I have a few friends in Japan and they are all ok but still pretty shaken up.
Companies like Panasonic have been selling batteries at discounted rates and have temporarily spun up production, people are being told to avoid using their cars if necessary and conserve fuel.
One thing I have been impressed by though is how well the safety procedures and infrastructure have held up. The last time something of this magnitude hit Japan it was utterly devastating.
One thing I have been upset with is the fear-mongering circulating the nuclear power plant. Many, many articles are written with thoughtless connections to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki... nuclear power plants and nuclear bombs are COMPLETELY different things. Nobody seems to understand what the real danger is from a breach like this is (fallout). I just hope and pray that the technicians there can keep the cooling units running and slow the reaction.
Anyway, I know my prayers are with everyone helping in the effort around the world...
Wait, companies are selling stuff at discounted rates instead of raising the prices to the maximum allowed under government-instituted non-gouging rules?
I dunno if you remember back in 06 with Katrina, but George W Bush went on TV to boldly proclaim that price-gouging, such as selling water and lumber for five times the regular price, would not be allowed (even though the price of oil and gas went through the roof).
Also the Apple stores have been info hubs since they are one of the few places with free WiFi and the safe are setting out charge cables so people can come in and charge their phones to keep in contact.

Yeah, Japan is big on honour, and lots of people there are willing to help any way they can...
I hope they get through it ok
