Title: The Simpsons Reviewed For Unsuitable Nuclear Jokes
Post by: Mr. Analog on March 29, 2011, 08:26:39 AM
Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a human being:

Quoteseveral European countries are reportedly reviewing episodes of 'The Simpsons' for any 'unsuitable' references to nuclear disaster,

What's this? A sane point of view?
QuoteI appreciate the sympathy, however misplaced it is. I get a bit angry when everyone focuses on the nuclear stuff going on. The whole nuclear thing will affect some people in Fukushima prefecture (mostly economically) and maybe some of the neighboring prefectures. Still let's look at things in perspective: 3 hospitalized (they are fine apart from some 'sunburn') from the Fukushima plant issue; over 20,000 missing or dead from the tsunami plus a multitude more homeless and hospitalized. We aren't suffering from nuclear fallout, people, we are suffering from one of the worst natural disasters to hit Japan in over 20 years. Still that is the nature of the beast, 20,000 is just too large a number for people to internalize and sympathize with. However, we can all imagine our gruesome death at the hand of deadly radiation. We all know that these episodes aren't being censored out of sympathy. I just hope they don't replace the episodes with a tsunami episode.

*sigh* you show me any industrial site that can survive a 9.0 earthquake, a tsunami and four explosions and have THREE people in hospital for burns and my eyebrows will be raised.

As for dealing with fallout if there's one country that has experience in this arena it's Japan.

Hmm...  Having trouble imagining you not being a human being.

But yeah, like usual the media is focusing on the wrong story (the sensational one, rather than the horrible one), and country leaders around the world are knee-jerk-reacting to the media hype.

In Response to The Simpsons specifically:
Well it's not like they are talking about The Simpsons episodes that are coming out today or are scheduled for new release in the future.  These are episodes from 1992 and 2005.  So not like The Simpsons writers are purposely making light of the disaster itself, or any reference to it.  I'm sure they wouldn't release a new one either as that would be in bad taste, whether it be about the plant or the tsunami.... well at least for a while.

As mentioned in the article it's like the whole "Homer Simpson vs New York" thing, where the episode was pulled from syndication after the September 11th attacks...
