Title: Boring but effective hockey defense: 1-3-1 neutral zone trap
Post by: Thorin on November 10, 2011, 03:03:26 PM
So the Tampa Bay Lightning has been using this 1-3-1 setup in the neutral zone to try and force turnovers in the neutral zone.  The Philadelphia Flyers came into Tampa Bay and decided they would not fall into the neutral zone trap, as can be seen in these two clips, both from the first period of the game:

Man, that's some boring but effective hockey.  Usually the team playing the trap is less obvious, because the other team is attacking it and so there is the illusion of movement.  Philadelphia refusing to skate into the trap made it real obvious, though.

Commentators and bloggers are now talking about how to speed up the game of hockey so that the trap and refusing to enter the trap doesn't happen.

I say if the Klingons enter the neutral zone they are in violation of the peace treaty and fair game for ANY Federation players
