you know some of those really cool ASCII art type of things that people put inside Youtube comments? The ones that use the extended character set?
Well, here's one that is pretty amazing/scary, I copied it to clipboard and pasted it into Notepad andit was gobbledygook... but in the forum it shows up, look at what it says...

^ and it doesn't use a single "A..Z" ascii character!
Wow, amirite? #ormaybeIshouldprobablyjustgotosleepnow
Hmmm....?

Hmmm....?
weird inconsistency, see attached for "proof I am not crazy" (at least not in this case ;) )
But copy-paste it into a Youtube comment field, you'll see it properly (I think)
Weird. I've had font problems on this machine for a while...
Ah yes, unicode and code pages and character sets. NEVER FUN.
"The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!) (http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html)", an article by Joel Spolsky.

even weirder: my XP machine at work in Chrome = same visible result as you, Mr. Analog! But @ home my W7 machine in Chrome = the screenshot I provided.
or maybe not so weird. I jumped onto the Googlenator...
http://www.google.com/search?q=utf-8+vs+ISO+8859+1
and found this
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1893946/iso-8859-1-vs-utf-8
"Unicode is taking over and has already surpassed all others. I suggest you hop on the train right now.
Note that there are several flavors of unicode. Joel Spolsky gives an overview."
and
"UTF-8 is supported everywhere on the web. Only in specific applications is it not. You should always use utf-8 if you can."
and
"The majority of the Web is UTF-8 now: w3techs.com/technologies/overview/character_encoding/all "
...but...
"If you want world domination, use UTF-8 all the way, because this covers every human character available at the world, including Asian, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and so on, while ISO-8859 is only restricted to Latin characters."
So I guess our forum webpages are "restricted to Latin characters", amirite? (just weird that it worked at home) (but TOTALLY makes sense why Youtube comments textareas allow Unicode, since it's a worldwide timevirusservice)
Also found this excellent "guide to Unicodificationing your webpaginations"

You see there is this button... magic button... that I haven't pushed yet since getting to version 1.0 of these forums. That button says "Run Task Now" and is in this section...
QuoteConvert the database and data to UTF-8
UTF-8 is an international character set covering nearly all languages around the world. Converting your database and data to UTF-8 can make it easier to support multiple languages on the same board. It also can enhance search and sorting capabilities for languages with non-latin characters.
Run Task Now
Yeah, except we all know how smoothly full-database-conversion tasks run, always a flawless conversion, no data loss, no downtime...
And since we're all Latin-Alphabet speakers here, I doubt it's really necessary... But hey it's your baby.
ASCII to UNICODE == easy
It's going the other way 'round that gets... tough
