They really are going all out on the whole "Not Metro" look.

I think they need to go back to their "Metallica" font

Also, word on the street, there's work being done already to slap a Windows 7 style interface to Win8 by SP1

"Slap it on"? It was already there. But they keep removing the option to even show it by default on log in. So far they have been rather committed to the Not Metro interface even on the desktop.

Yes there is a registry hack for it but it's still an incomplete port, from what I hear they will be integrating Win7 style UI with an updated "Classic" mode option.

There /was/ a registry hack. There was also a way to drop a shortcut in autostart. Both options have been removed.

I don't know how it can possibly be an incomplete port. the the same base OS. If they didn't start from Windows 7, they are seriously doing something wrong. Its the Metro stuff that's new, and should be a layer over the same APIs that the fancy Windows 7 accelerated interface used. Both should "just work".

And I'm just being "Mr. Know It All". As a programmer I find it odd that they couldn't just layer the new interface over the fancy w7 hardware accelerated compositing interface. They essentially want to do the same thing (composite apps onto the display using hardware acceleration). There shouldn't be anything stopping the Not Metro interface from coexisting with the new old explorer interface.

Feh.

Right now I suspect the challenges aren't technical in nature (but managerial).

When the desktop suffers like Vista did you'll see changes.

*already looking forward to Windows 9*

I can buy that. I/They have seen /a lot/ of backlash. But I've also seen a lot of positive reviews. More than I think I saw for vista. But not more than W7 ;D even I like (rather, don't hate) W7. It's a nice place to visit, but I still wouldn't like to live there ;D

I am now using Windows 8 primarily at home on my business laptop.  I actually like it so far... but then again I saw all the "Power User" stuff in TechEd this year and that had me all giddy to use it.  So I might be a little bias before even starting to use it.

I'll say this... it is DAMN fast even compared to a fresh Windows 7 install.

I tried reading the link in the first post but I'm still getting headaches from reading screens (I wonder what this weird illness is/was); I didn't notice any discussion about Metro / Not Metro, though?  What's that about?

Nope. Its just a fixed grid of solid colour squares, and a cleaner font. Looks a lot like Metro to me.

The joke that was a bit subtle was calling it "not Metro" because it's "metro" but they don't call it that anymore ;)
