What I want to know is why the Daleks have an Asylum and how crazy you have to be to go there :D

Well, that was answered in the episode today.  Has anyone not seen it yet?  Should I wait with discussing it?

Maybe create a "Doctor Who discussion/spoiler thread". for this and future eps. Because some of us will avoid that thread until watching.

Or we could install a spoiler tag mod that works in almost every post?

She's cute.

Also so's her looks.

Her spirit is kinda like Amy in early eps, combined with the one-shot sorta-companion (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Christina_de_Souza) in the Tenant episode who stole the flying bus at the end and went on her own adventures.

Saw it last night, still feeling kinda unsure if the logic was very tight re. the whole re-booting of the Daleks as vilains, I don't quite get how they [spoilered] Amy and Rory once it was revealed that
Spoiler
. Is it like a timetravel-teleporter thingie they each have?  ???

Some thoughts as I watched this episode this morning.

Holy cow the new Doctor Who moves fast, I really liked the pacing of the old serials I think this episode should have been a multi-parter (especially with the twist, shezus). I enjoyed the characters for the most part, I think the ending was a bit contrived (or at least it sped by too quickly).

What I DID like was all the callbacks to earlier episodes and ideas, tying so many Doctor Who eras together to me THAT was the best part of this episode.

They didnt explain if the change was to just the ones in orbit or all of the. Maybe that change will be reset the moment the come in contact with others.

The twist was so heavily foreshadowed it was painful.

Agreed, particularly with the camera work ;) but I will say nothing in case anyone else there hasn't seen it yet.

Next episode will have dinosaurs.  It's on Saturday at 7pm on Space.

SPOILERS for the rest of the post

Yes she's cute but we knew that a couple of months ago.  I was surprised to see her as a Dalek, just because that's going to be very difficult to bring her in as a companion - unless he somehow saves her from her Dalek shell?

Darren, I think you were asking how they found and teleported Amy and Rory - they both have time-traveler particles in them that the Daleks can sense.  That stuff was explained in the episode where Rose accidentally touches a Dalek and he comes back to life.

I think it's an interesting concept to make all the Daleks forget about the Doctor.  This allows him to escape their ship, but it also sets up a chance for him to treat them differently than in the past.  The idea that they don't kill him because they find him so beautiful in his hatred of them, I dunno about that.  It's an interesting thought, but it undermines the idea that the Doctor escapes them through his smarts rather than just that they let him live.

Mr. A, I agree with the callbacks - I hope they keep that up for all the long-time Whovians who still watch.

What I hated about this episode was Amy and Rory being split up and Amy being a model, for some damn reason!  I mean really, she was introduced as doing strip-o-grams to pay the bills but realizing it was vapid work, then she went on these wonderful mind-expanding journeys, then she goes back to even more vapid work?  Really?

But the kids and I are certainly looking forward to the next episodes - it's still one of the better shows out there (worst show?  I'm guessing Honey Boo Boo or 1 Girl 5 Gays).

Regarding the modelling there was some self awareness of that early on in the episode which I found amusing.
Title: Re: Doctor Who Starts Up!
Post by: Lazybones on September 07, 2012, 09:44:14 AM
Amy's modeling was established way back in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closing_Time_%28Doctor_Who%29
QuoteAmy has become a minor celebrity, appearing in an ad for Petrichor perfume, with the tagline, "For the girl who's tired of waiting."

In the episode the Doctor avoids them and also sees the perfume ad.
Title: Re: Doctor Who Starts Up!
Post by: Thorin on September 07, 2012, 09:56:15 AM
Well yeah, but "petrichor" was a code word and Amy was doing the ad so that the Doctor would see it, from what I remember from that episode.

I dunno, it rankled me more than the fact that the Daleks, upon encountering a strange unknown alien in their Parliament, didn't just shoot.  Which in and of itself was already weird.
Title: Re: Doctor Who Starts Up!
Post by: Mr. Analog on September 07, 2012, 10:12:22 AM
Well that's been a problem with the new series' Daleks for a while, before it used to be "shoot first and keep shooting", then it was "shoot first and if anyone is left have them mine radioactive ore", then it was "shoot first and try to turn people into Daleks", now they don't even shoot first! LOL

SPOILERS for the rest of the post

Yes she's cute but we knew that a couple of months ago.

I said "so's her looks" cuz yeah obviously before seeing her play the actual Whovian character she was just another young pretty face gonna replace Amy/Rory -- but I was also saying "cute" in the sense of her playful fast-talking character, some have said she's gonna give the Doctor a run for his money, kinda bringing back a bit of a Donna vibe. I was ready to be skeptical because the Matt Smith episodes are the ones I've really invested in so hard to say goodbye to the Ponds, but this ep did a really good job of making me feel a bit hopeful that it will still be fun and funny, and yes her looks don't hurt either.

btw Anyone else think the whole Amy-is-a-b-word element of the story felt forced/dishonest? I mean c'mon her and Rory have been pretty damn up-front about issues, why would this one particular issue turn into pushing him away instead of just talking about it and dealing with it... TOGETHER! I won't say the word contrived but I was sure as hell thinking it while watching and they finally tell the viewer "what went wrong".  ::)

I dunno if she's gonna be like Donna.  Donna was smart but headstrong and very grounded.

Hard to say if Oswin would turn left or right, or surprise the Doctor and the viewers with a whole new unexpected direction...

I read a few discussions about this apparent problem/plotholr.

Consensus seems to be, simply, it's a poor word choice by the Doctor.

Amy scared = the human emotion.
Dalek scared = logical analysis of a situation that results In a conclusion that avoidance of it will result in extended survival duration as contrasted with entering it.

Alright, the third episode of Doctor Who's on tonight at 7pm Edmonton time on Space.  Maybe I'll have to take an hour break from the Cave Crawl planned for tonight!

Okay, it's been two days since the episode aired so I'm going to discuss it.

SPOILERS!

------
Spoiler

I actually liked the new race they introduced, and the change in the doctor's personality that Amy attributed to him traveling without her (well, without humans).  That it was set somewhere else than Cardiff in the UK was kinda nice (at least they've stayed away from the gravel pits since they restarted the show in 2005).  That the Kahler cyborg marked a safe circle around Mercy to give the people somewhere to feel safe from him even though he was a stone cold killer, and that even after threatening to wipe out the town he couldn't bring himself to shoot innocents, was an interesting view into the mind of something supposedly created for only one reason.

But that flashback to the doctor as Tennant played him in his last season (all angry and ready to kill at the drop of a hat) I thought was interesting.  I actually liked the story in this better than the season opener, if only because the Daleks are slowly being turned into funny garbage cans with plungers, egg beaters, and a broomstick with a tennis ball instead of the universe's ultimate killers.  And I didn't really like the Dalek Puppets - that didn't fit at all with how Daleks supposedly view other races (to be used as slaves and / or to be killed on sight).

Well the guy can't say a thing right when it comes to convincing the taxpayers of Edmonton to help pay for the new arena.  But that should be in a different thread.

You need to see Cowboys vs Aliens, as my kids called this episode (I'm sure it was better than the movie).

Sorry, compare the new show to the original, first season, black-and-white look.

The interior may or may not get a mid-season update, I can't say because the episode hasn't aired yet.

And considering we had in-person discussions about the companions changing and how in the world they were going to remove the old companions and introduce the new ones, I really thought that'd be up for talking about, especially as it happened at the end of September.

It's a lot easier for me to daydream while people talk about something that I don't want to hear about in person, but not so much when I'm reading a post ;)

That said, I'm /waaay/ behind. Like I've seen a few eps total out of the what.. 33 seasons?

It's weird, the more "stable" I am, the less I feel like watching TV. dunno why. The past several days, while I was out of my anti-anxiety meds, I caught up on a half season (or more) of CSI, and CSI NY. All in a couple days. heh.

Spent all day doing family Christmas stuff, forgot to tape the new Doctor, downloaded it in 7.2 minutes, avoided more than that in commercials, decided to watch it late at night to judge whether the youngest will be too scared (after seeing scary stuff in the trailers), now ... kinda wishing I could talk about it.

Jenna Louise Coleman is pretty.  They say it lots.  They're not wrong.

If you're gonna watch it, watch those little minisodes first that I linked earlier, so the characters that you meet make more sense.
