Title: XCOM: Enemy Unknown 2012
Post by: Melbosa on September 06, 2012, 07:23:48 PM
So I've been following this development and it looks like it will be just like XCOM the original game with updates and new stuff.  But still that good old turn based action I remember and love!

http://www.xcom.com/enemyunknown/

It looks so fun and juicy... might take Oct 9th off from any form of work and sit in front of that glowing screen of death!

Something new for the Steam Pre-Order: http://store.steampowered.com/app/200510/.  They have a Kickstarter style bar that is based on how many people buy the pre-order gives bonus content to everyone whom pre-orders.  Never seen that before on Steam.  I urge you, if you were a fan of the original and want to bring it back again, please please please pre-order this one and join me in saving planet Earth once again!

Just picked up the game this morning. Just a note that the PC box version apparently only comes in special edition mode (still $60), so you get all the per-order steam stuff (classic soldier/deco packs/color customization (but not civ V)).

  Plus:  Sew on patch
            Wallpapers
            Ringtones
            Music
            Poster
            Hard Cover story/art book

Not bad for no pre-order i thought anyways.

That's actually pretty cool, so many in-box games these days are just the disc making the decision to go with Steam or other direct download options slightly more appealing.

Once you take a bite out of it post a review!

Will do. Not much time between Borderlands 2/Baby/Full DVR/X-Com though, so might take a bit.

P.S. WTF have you done to assault rifles Gearbox!?!?!

Looking at what is in my steam library I am very glad I haven't purchased a boxed PC game in a long time.

The last box game I bought for PC was Bioshock 2 (I think) and it is currently uninstalled, sitting on a shelf.

It seems like everyone on my Steam friends list is playing Borderlands these days haha

I haven't played "Baby" I hear it gets challenging when you get to the higher levels (less grind but more frustrating as you reach level cap)

LOL. Playing the female mod, easier at low level, but ramps up to impossible later I hear.

Oh gods, the female mod is known to emit terrible screeches and whines at you, starting at the mid levels and carrying through to the end game.  And the only defense you have is the Here's Cash Go Shopping move.

Not a time sink at the moment. After a 1.8 gig patch, my game is unplayable.. grrrr

Was loving the game before that though.

Back up and running. Seems (for some) the game went into a mode of about 5 fps and choppy sound, until you rebooted your machine. Seems odd, but there you have it.

Indeed. Definitely has the just one-more-turn aspect to it. Firaxis, stayed pretty true to the original, while making the look and feel modern.

Not perfect for sure. Your men seem to miss a lot of 85+% shots.
The tutorial and manual are lacking.
*grumble* *grumble* *grumble* Patch!

But nothing game-breaking.

Definite B+ so far.

Post by: Melbosa on October 14, 2012, 01:59:31 PM
I have to agree with Mags on the soldier missing part but it gets better with equipment.

The manual, like some digital download games, is accessible from the steam right click menu on the game library, but it is limited.  The in game encyclopedia research stuff is pretty good, but does leave some things questionable.

There isn't a traditional tutorial, but the "story" sets High Priority items to forward your research items and helps you with the basic stuff.  This story mode can be toggled off if you just want to play.

More to come from me..

So I finished the Single Player last night.  30+ hours to get it completed, only lost 6 soldiers the whole time playing, and I didn't do everything in the game yet.

Overall impressions: Very Highly Recommended!

Pros:

Cons:

While it has some Cons, the game itself will own my game space for times to come yet.  It brought back so much of the original that made the game fun and worth all the money!  People in the office here whom have never played the original still have as much time into the game as I have and like it just as much.

NOTE: The demo does not do this game justice.  Get a borrowed copy if you really want to see what it is like, then purchase for yourself!

I'm actually surprised no one has said anything about me posting at 2/3/4 AM

Remember, CARDIO

My problem is I coach (and thus practice) sprint-based sports.  Go fast, then rest.  That'll never work.  Also, episode 1 (or was it 2?) of season 1 of Walking Dead had a zombie in a tank HOW THE HELL DOES SOMEONE GET BITTEN IN A TANK?!
Title: Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown 2012
Post by: Mr. Analog on October 26, 2012, 02:51:47 PM
Well, in The Walking Dead, everyone is infected so all that had to happen is someone dying (they all come back), maybe he died from boredom in that tank (as I saw very little tetris in there).

Actually one thing that really bugs me about zombie apocalypse things is they always show police blockades and military operations as having failed but it makes no damn sense. I mean, at least with Walking Dead two of the main guys for Season 1&2 were cops but seriously they're the only ones who had firepower and the willingness to use it? What about all the people with actual training and stuff??

If there were massive hordes and they were overrun fine, makes sense, but where do these mass hordes disappear to when the small plucky band of social misfits finally wander through Fort Awesome? Zombie tea party somewhere else?

C'mon, it's Atlanta, Georgia!  There are more guns than cockroaches down there!  You know there's something like 4 billion small-arms bullets in the US alone?  The US government publicly admits to having about 1.5 billion bullets stockpiled, and private citizens have more than the government.

However, the show has indicated the herds are migrating somewhere, so maybe they are going to a Zombie Tea Party:

I heard that actually Classic mode was also Man Mode (i.e. the mode you play... if you're a man) lol (curse you TotalBiscuit) hahaha

The more I look at it though the more I want to play it and I do love single player games :)

Yeah they are saying they will fix that with a patch.  I know what you mean.  Best thing I do for that is use the Q & E keys to swing the camera to an angle that lets me do what I want when you have that issue.  But I agree, that bug is my largest complaint so far too...

Yeah, it seems to work, but I also have this thing where it doesn't quite show the level I'm on, not sure if it's a scroll wheel thing or not but it seems to reset so I can't see anything

grrr

but yeah anyway, first time through on normal is fairly easy so far, though once in a while I'll get one mission that just sucks balls (send in the redshirts!)

Good ol' luck o' the draw haha

Overall a great game, I put in about 10 hours this weekend, there are a few bugs that really need to be sorted out but otherwise a lot of fun.

I wasn't really sure about turn-based tactical stuff as I'm usually not very good at it but I've been really surprised how easy it is so far (at least on Normal)

The only time I've had any difficulty is when fighting with the camera, all it takes is leaving one squad member out in the open by accident to turn the tide of battle :)
Title: Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown 2012

I found around the 20h mark the difficulty really started to show at Normal.  The thing was though I didn't finish the game right away, I kinda pushed it of for a while...

I'm kinda wondering how crazy things are going to get heh! I've met all the basic and some of the variant classes already (I haven't fought an Ethereal yet, but I feel that's coming soon).

I built a SHIV yesterday but I couldn't assign it in my squad for some reason, I guess people have been having issues with it anyway. It's a lot less versatile than a full squad with a variety of abilities. If anything I'll throw a rookie in the team so they get experience, kinda team them like VIPs, though sometimes they surprise me.

I really wish the game didn't give my NPCs nicknames 'cause I get attached to 'em

So turn-based tactical shooter - you actually tell your little army men where to move to and where to shoot, then you click "turn done", then they do it, then you give the next set of orders, and repeat?

Kinda... little more like board games, cause you move your guys and do stuff, then they move their guys and do stuff, and then repeat.  But they can interrupt on your turn, so that is where the D&D likeness adds in.  So rather than plan it all out and hit the GO! button for your turn, you play out your turn with Movement and Action for each soldier, and only if the enemy was ready for you do they act before you do - but it is a predetermined reaction they preform (always a shot first action).  The individual soldiers do their action individually, then when you have nothing left to do for each one, the turn ends and the enemy beings.

Yes, yes you would. I mean there are so many tactical options that appear when you start combining the basic abilities of your squad, get your Heavy to lay down covering fire, have your Assault flush out an enemy and all the while you have a Sniper ready on high ground... you stack bonuses and abilities and generally learn how to outsmart your enemy through formation, quick thinking, being prepared and a few lucky rolls of the dice.

I've been through some tough scrapes without any damage to my team due to thorough planning and flawless execution even with some bad rolls.

There's no one more surprised than me that I like/excel at this game.

So seriously who doesn't have this game yet?  And especially after this GamesCon announcement for expansion: http://kotaku.com/xcom-enemy-unknown-gets-its-first-major-expansion-this-1175378649

The game is fantastic.  One of the best remakes ever IMO.  You cannot go wrong with it as it promises everything the original did and so much more.

Anyone want this game but don't have it yet?
