Yeah, so you can't play multiplayer Minecraft right now because a certain set of servers is unavailable (see attached screenshot). We can check the status later by going to this URL: http://help.mojang.com/
Basically these are the servers that store multiplayer session data and therefore allow multiplayer to work.
I wonder what they actually do...

I'm pretty sure that's an authentication thing to make sure people with pirated Minecraft installs can't join servers.

I thought that was what the login servers were for.
I'd be willing to guess that they're the Snoop servers, although http://xpaw.ru/mcstatus/ shows the Session and Snoop servers as two different entities.
Session servers came back up so I logged in. Hopefully it continues working.
And no, I don't really know what session data needs to be accessed / stored by Mojang, but it appears every 6,000 ticks there's an update to the session server.
It's not working now, and the service statuses can't even be checked.
I came home from the rink today to find a couple of kids playing minecraft, so they must be back up.
