Title: Revolution: It sucks but I can't stop watching!
Post by: Thorin on September 24, 2012, 11:52:10 PM
There's this new show on called Revolution.  It's got plotholes you could drive a truck through and crossbows on old rifle stocks that are built complete bass-ackwards, and yet I'm sitting here watching the second episode and just can't stop!

Stay Calm and Watch Doctor Who

Thing is, I think Revolution through the first couple of episodes is kinda like Doctor Who - quirky, some things are best left not thought about, but a good story so far (and in two episodes it's progressed pretty damn quickly already).

But jesus, fifteen years after the power went out an ex-Google employee has an AC/DC t-shirt on that looks brand new!  Where would that shirt even have come from?  Also, all cars (even those classics without any computerized components) stopped working, yet the premise is that the electricity stopped working.

Augh that would give me an aneurysm.

Like, if you're going to have a show like this where there is a SINGLE PREMISE that kicks it off it's kind of important to get little details like that going.

Hahah, regarding the AC-DC shirt, y'know that reminds me of Earth 2 in many ways, where it's supposed to be really hard fought survival and yet everyone's hair is perfectly coiffed.

The problems in Revolution have been compared with Earth 2 by others online already.  The idea of not having any electricity except for near special magical pendants creates a host of cool, interesting situations, but anyone trying to logically pick apart the premise can do so in under 1.9 seconds flat.

Hah

I do like the premise though, it reminds me of a sci-fi story I read once where there was a satellite or something that would destroy anything using electricity so the world had to do without it and one of the things that was built was a computer using people in parallel doing mathematics... kind of like Medieval scribes... I wish I could remember more.

My first thought is move all the electronics deep under ground.

Also in any wasteland type movie / show everyone's teeth are perfect, accept maybe the mutants and villains.

Dentists and cockroaches?

This is more of a modern-day agrarian society than a wasteland.  All those people that used to program computers now grow corn (even though corn is missing some very basic vitamins and wheat would be a much better alternative), but it's not like they suddenly forgot about brushing their teeth.  A good comparison would be to look at the Hutterites - they have good teeth and excellent health as well.

Monsanto crops are engineered not to reproduce, IE you need to purchase seeds every year... so as soon as Monsanto was shut down, where did everyone find these organic corn crops so they could replant without industry? Also screw corn and wheat they aren't really that good for you to live on alone, ether of them.

See, you really can't think about it too much or else the show just falls apart.

Hahaha, I wouldn't mind it if it was tongue-in-cheek kinda thing but it presents itself as serious and I think that's the problem.

Kind of like in Dr Who, the slow invasion where:

Spoiler
Millions of peoples hearts are stopped for what appears to be a very long time before the Doctor figures out how to start them again... People just get up and walk way.

All I could think about was that damn Cube game trailer.

An' yeah, there's some artistic license taken in most of these shows.  Revolution falls apart under more than 10 seconds' scrutiny, which is why I don't understand why I was still watching it all the way through the second episode...
