Title: Teleport Huts
Post by: Thorin on December 05, 2012, 10:09:30 PM
So I've built a couple of teleport huts and a central hub for them to connect to, screenshots are attached.  I've made sure to arrange them in such a way that when you teleport you don't have to turn to keep moving - if you walk up to the hut going south, then you exit Grand Central going south.

The huts are pretty primitive still, but the command blocks are hidden at least.  I imagine that Grand Central will get turned into a proper building at some point, and I'm thinking of either a cobblestone wall or iron bars or both around the teleport huts to protect the newly-teleported from THOSE DAMN CREEPERS.

Sadly I could not do this all in Survival, to set the teleport command on the command block required me to be in Creative mode.  I tried as much as possible to remember to switch back to Survival, though.  Anyway, give it a try.  Grand Central is here: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-15/64/40/max/0/0 and http://tomasu.org:8123/?worldname=righteouswrath&mapname=flat&zoom=6&x=-15&y=64&z=40.  I suppose it could use a path to meet up with the rest of the buildings at spawn...

VERY COOL work, you should make sure to document the co-ordinates for each location.

I'll start clearing an area.

Now for Teleport Central what do you guys want it to look like? We have a nice big area going on there.

I could model it after Grand Central Terminal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal) and I could add a subway station connection, or I could go for some kind of googie airport design.

I'll be careful not to dig down in case Melbosa's stuff is there.

(also I really should have played last night, things did not go as planned ugh)

Grand Central Station would be kewl indeed!

Almighty, I'll start finding architectural drawings and start marking areas for scale and design something compatible.

I will build a small structure around the current co-ordinates and ensure that there is a safe path that connects to the Spawn area

I will need bricks, smooth stone, windows and wood. Drop them off in the Community Storage (if you can't let me know, I'll add a construction storage area)

How many stacks do you think you need of each?

I like the big sweeping architecture of Grand Central Station, although we don't need to make the underground platforms...  We'll just make teleport stations like what we have there already.  I hope I left enough room for a decent-sized building?  What I'm imagining is a big open hall with teleport stations on the walls facing into the big open hall.  For now there are only two teleport stations, but at some point I can imagine four to eight on each wall.  Each teleport station is three blocks wide, three blocks deep, four blocks high, if that helps with planning how big to make this?  I'm thinking of a building that is about 40 blocks by 26 blocks, maybe 30 blocks tall?  The teleport stations would be along the 40 block walls, so the interior after taking away the teleport stations would be 38x20.  Dunno if that's big enough to really give that sense of Big Building...

The floor needs some kind of coloured pattern, I think.  And we can do a golden archway over the main door (I have a lot of gold...).  And we should put some potted plants in there, and frames with items, just because we can :)

The more I think about this, the more I wonder just how much we really need to copy from Grand Central, though.  I mean, the big open area is a great idea, but I don't think we need to add clocks and information booths and stores and meeting rooms and all that kind of stuff, do we?

Ooh, lava-under-glass lighting, or redstone lamps, or something different than torches would be cool!  Damn, I wanna go mining!

I'll update the signs with coordinates and mark them so they show up on the Overviewer.

Given that we can put clocks in frames I'd like to add features like that, it just makes an epic cool build.

Again, I'll look at plans get a sense of scale, mark an area and start constructing the exterior.

Once we figure out how things look the rest becomes easier.

As well for additional teleporters we can always expand into the ground.

Oh, clocks in frames, great idea!

But yeah, first thing is to figure out just how big to build this thing.

Is there anywhere else that the Grand Porter Co should build regional Tele-PortalsTM?  I'm thinking one down in South Leenton (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/116/64/1619/-1/0/0) and Freeport (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/2568/64/-442/-3/0/0) and Lennyton (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/9768/64/1716/-1/0/0)?

I'll sort it out, don't worry.

Just make sure there's lots of smooth stone and stone bricks
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Thorin on December 06, 2012, 01:23:47 PM
stone bricks not red bricks, right?  I'm using the red bricks for the Tele-Portals, simply because they stand out so nicely.

I'm going to put a nether portal in a small basement room at Grand Central next time I'm on, just to connect all the transportation corridors together :)
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Mr. Analog on December 06, 2012, 01:50:58 PM
Yeah, stone brick works I think. We can figure out decorations later.

I like the idea of a nether portal but it may be in conflict with other pre-existing ones.
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Melbosa on December 06, 2012, 01:56:12 PM
Yeah it might be too close to someone elses....
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Thorin on December 06, 2012, 02:00:56 PM
I would perfect-match the coordinates and then go hunting around to see if anyone else's is nearby.  If someone else's is nearby and not perfect-matched, I would move theirs in the Nether so they are perfect-matched.  I don't think that's too much to ask, that portals get perfect-matched?  I'm even willing to do the work myself, just it might mean someone's portal in the Nether gets moved a few blocks over...

It's west of my house near spawn, I thought it was east at first.

Not sure what's down there, will have to do a survey.

You have a couple.  You're talking about the one that's lower in the Nether, in a nice brick-and-glass encasing, right?  I wouldn't want to move that.  I'm willing to bet it's close to perfect-matched on the coordinates, though.
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Thorin on December 06, 2012, 02:26:43 PM
Also, the portal would be in the basement and could be on the far side, away from other nearby portals, reducing the chance there's cross-talk between them.
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Mr. Analog on December 06, 2012, 02:29:08 PM
Yeah, my portal is at 0,0 in the Nether so it helps me when I get lost lol
Title: Re: Teleport Huts
Post by: Thorin on December 06, 2012, 03:09:08 PM
Your portal is at -2,-1/-2 faces east/west in the nether and +31,+43/+44 faces east/west in the overworld.  -2,-1 in the nether perfect matches -16,-8 in the overworld.  +31,+43 in the overworld perfect matches +3,+5 in the nether.  So it's not quite perfect-matched.  My portal would have to be at least 5 away in the nether.  I was thinking of putting in a portal at -16,+40, which would come out to -2,+5 in the nether, but that'll probably be too close.  If I go to the other end of Grand Central, though, I could put it underground at -40,+40, which is -5,+5 in the nether, which should be far enough away not to attract travellers from your portal.  If that's still too close, I can put in a backyard shed once Grand Central is build...

Mark it with dark wood and I'll spec out where to put stuff when I do my initial reccy.

I'll be flattening land where appropriate as well.

Actually, I'll wait to see where you build and then I'll adjust for that.  For now I'll just run over to your portal nexus and use that if I need into the nether :)

k so when will you be on, then?  I might not be on until late tonight, unless CowGirl does the driving tonight.

Tom, the Overviewer isn't updating, I think.  I can't see any of my Tele-Portal regional stations, nor the start of Grand Central.

I can't tell if it's all obscured by trees or if it's still not showing.  I guess for now I'll leave it be and once the area's cleared of trees and building has started, we can take another look.

I started marking the walls for the Terminal, getting the height right is going to be important getting the right scale for things is going to be a challenge but one I'm up for.

We may also want to dig out under it and make that area safe, so if anyone wants to make a basement there... BE WARNED there are caves under there and they are very ugly, they've been there since the map generated and they use the old cave algorithm which means there are "death holes" everywhere under there. I blocked off the obvious ones but still, stranger danger!

VERY NICE job on the teleporters! So easy to get around now.

Thanks, I like 'em too :)  And they hide the command block so it's "magic".  Oh, and I saw those caves and death holes.  I've filled in three layers deep of dirt and/or cobble, I think, but yeah, Careful Digging.

I just looked at the screenshot and noticed you made the footprint larger than what I'd originally laid out with the red bricks (for corners).  That's cool, the bigger the better :)  I might have to push the Tele-Portals back a block, but that's not that hard to do, just have to switch to Creative to reset the coordinates by one.  And then I noticed the cake :)

Well I got the main part of the Facade done this morning (I was a minin' last night)

I used SipsCo brand scaffolding to great effect.

I suspect we're gonna need some more glass, so bring sand if you got it :D

Without the roof on it's 16 blocks high, each large window (excluding the main window facing east) is 11 blocks high. I plan on having skylights as well probably in banks of 6 to 8.

I'll get the walls up first and I'll figure out the roof later.

Thanks very much!!

The only really tricky bit was I had to build ladders rather than use my usual way of getting down from high places (aka water) turns out in this wintery zone water turns into a brick lol

Normally I just nerd pole up with bricks and then waterslide down (whee!)

But ladders work too :D

Also the 16 block height is just about perfect, I can't wait to get the rest done (tonight maybe!)

I'll have to teleport to Mootopia and get some wool for the checkerboard floor :D

That looks really nice!

Yeah, I don't like snow biomes, just because I don't like the snow covering everything all the time.  The landing pad freezing is an unfortunate side effect, too.

The main floor is going to line up with those door holes, right?  I'll have to lift the Tele-Portals up a few blocks then.

But I'm a tad worried about light levels. Do you think it'll be easy to keep it from being overrun by mobs at night? Redstone Lamps in the floor perhaps?

Thanks brotha! It was a lot of fun designing the exterior (so far, lots left to do :D)

Yeah the floor is going to be raised two blocks, so ... I know you wanted to move stuff anyway. Likely what I will do is complete everything but the floor and we can sort out where stuff is going.

Thanks man! yeah I'm thinking it will be bright enough, I'll be adding chandeliers to keep light levels up in the ceiling and there will be a lot of torches / glowstone around the interior.

If you look how they light Grand Central Terminal you'll see they have lamp posts inside the building, I may do them like the shorter version of the light standards in Edge City with white wool and torches or glowstone blocks. I'll see what looks good once I get the floor in.

We'll work it out :)

Edit: IF ONLY fences conducted redstone!!

Create a charcoal farm, trade charcoal for emeralds with blacksmiths and butchers (16-23 charcoal for 1 emerald), trade emeralds for glowstone with priests (1 emerald for 2-3 glowstone).  Blacksmiths, butchers, and priests are all pretty common in villages.

Also I mined out a TON of sand and found about 6 stacks hidden in one of my buildings :D so while i was putting up pillars glass was cooking.

I still don't know why that script wasn't copying the map back to disk. It makes no sense. I don't have the map set up in a ramdisk anymore, so there won't be any map issues like that. We have backups.

Also, I'd make a much better post detailing any issue like that. replying to a thread like this about a map loss.. is bad.

It happened back in August and we had a thread about it, I just haven't gotten around to rebuilding it yet (though I rebuilt the docks and the roads)
Yeah, feel free to do it in creative. If there is ever a time to cheat in a build its when a complex awesome build is lost due to incompetence.

I'm also rethinking using wool as a building material (as the original was built of wool) we tend to get a lot of lightning around Edge City...

Nope, it had all sorts of material, but the hull was wool (black, red for the waterline and white for the lettering) :D

The map had to be rolled back, which was a shame, I had found a jungle temple after the update.

I installed chandeliers and collected some nether fence (and battled a jillion Blazes holy moly)

I also collected a bunch of wool I have a plan for the ground lights in the building.

Oh I also paid a visit to The Kingdom of Moo, I like the triggers for the moat and the roaming cows. I added a little something to the throne :D

I also added some torches inside the blacksmiths

There's been a few teleport huts added now, the latest is to LuckyCh4rms' New Old Kingdom (at his request, since he wanted to get back into working on it): http://tomasu.org:8123/?worldname=righteouswrath&mapname=surface&zoom=6&x=733&y=64&z=-2285
