So who is in this year... oh and btw Reg opens March 30th, and the advertising poster is posted on the Frag site!
ZUH!?
That has to be a first!
I really need the date pinned down though, but yeah, likely I will go. I think this will be my 10th year (maybe 11th?) I can't remember
...GOD
I'd like to go. No idea what I'll play while there, but hey.
I could see my son attending this if a a couple of his friends can go. But when will it be?
It's TBD at the moment, hopefully they can sort that out soon (so I can book time)
As for games, well I STILL have to do Portal 2 co-op
And of course Minecraft / FTB
Or you can get a copy of Borderlands 2 and we can play together
OR we can play TF2 / L4D and you can bring a Linux box :D

I always bring a linux box ;)
A six-hour cooperative Minecraft build would be pretty cool, especially if there was a specific theme for the build. I'm sure that would come out awesome!
Hmm, I wonder if Borderlands works in Linux?
haha
Well you guys are privilaged to have a staff member whom can answer your questions. Aug 8-11, 2013 is the dates.
There is a decent number of steam titles on Linux now. Probably worth checking what is current.
FREAKING AWESOME
I'm in
Registered!
BAM!
So... I was the first person to register (outside of staff) this year.
You could say I'm ready
Who else is goin'
New Poster up today. You guys want some to distribute for me? www.fragapalooza.ca has the Large PDF for download.
Nice!
Can someone do me a favour? Can someone set someone strait for me on the Frag FB group (not page but group)? I have to be politicak in my response as a representative of FP... but doesn't mean others do to.
Guy complaining about prizes he won. I hate it when people rag on my staff ir event because of greed. No one would dare rag on a charity event with prizes but they will a not-for-profit event volunteer run. Erks my grits.
@%er should be here to play games and have fun not win DONATED prizes
What a douche
Anyway I am wary of White Knighting so I dunno, just remember the first rule of the internet: don't feed the trolls
Yeah I deleted his second post already.
So I finally paid. And instead of waiting till its way too damn late again, I was wondering if I could arrange a ride share with someone :)
Good timing I think seating is opening up soon.
Guys.... Frag needs help... our registrations are not what they need to be to cover costs. We've been advertising in schools, facebook, sign-posts, EB Games, and we're just not getting registrations. Our advertising budget doesn't exist but the president and myself have been footing cash for adverts anyway.
Any ideas or contacts in media we could leverage for some help?

Damn really? Not sure there is much I can do from out here....
I'm asking folks at ENTS but the group isn't that large.. Though one or more of them work at nait/u-of-a, so something might come of that.
You guys advertise at the students unions?
Post a nice official facebook and twitter message so people can reshare it, that may help.

I'm REALLY hoping we can figure out a way to get more people at Fraga, I'm not sure if they're tapping stuff like Reddit to get the word out but I think they need to get involved with the MLG community (if they haven't already). Get some SC2 or something happening? I unno...
We have engaged Reddit through one of our Staff members and I have engaged MLG community through LoL and SC2 Leagues. I have an official LoL tournament happening at the event, but can't seem to get a solid lead on an SC2 one. I have someone wanting to run it but they are hard to communicate with.
Frag really needs over 200 participants to really make a go of it. 200 paid participants. For contract reasons we are at Leduc for now, so venue change is not an option. Any other ideas? I'm fresh out and out of $$$ to help out :(
78 people short eh?
Hmm...

Well more than that. 18 of those registered are Staff which don't pay to be there. So almost 100 needed.
Ah
Wow. That's harsh. I'm amazed its less this year than the past few.
That's for sure...

A global search of reddit for Fragapalooza only returns the one post from last year for me as well
The Fraga post I found on Reddit was a Calgarian calling all Calgarians to go lay waste to all and sundry at Frag. Kinda funny that I found that when searching for Edmonton Fragapalooza.
Man, hope you get it sorted, otherwise you're just running on word-of-mouth this year.
We've been advertising in may places; major ones are Facebook Campaigns and Edmonton Catholic Schools. Added are EB Games locations (that I have made it to) and U of A and NAIT locations.
I haven't seen much on facebook. But hey, Adblock.
I really do think some kind of official announcement people can share/reblog/retweet/whatever would be a good idea. and do it fairly often ;)
I've been doing them... just don't want to over burden with them. Done 3 in the past month. I try to give updates and knowledge ones as well as we go. What can I say, I can up them to once a day if you think it would help. Just worried it would get annoying.
Well what we really need is people talking about it.
Infrequent posters on any social media site kind of don't get anywhere (they get buried by the stream).
How about a countdown post every day with a new challenge or something
Hmmm that might work. What challenge or idea do you think we should try?
I dunno, there are official tournaments that have rankings and stuff how about getting people to retweet a post with their scores and stuff
"What's your best Counterstrike moment #fragapalooza #yeg"
Or do a gamer trivia thing for fun?
Or ask opinions!
"Most OP Hero in DOTA 2 #fragapalooza #dota #yeg"
Stuff like that

If you don't post frequently, you get buried before people even see your post.
One little tid bit.. the reason the Obama campaign spammed the crap out of people? It got more people to donate, than it annoyed people enough to unsubscribe. So yes, some people did unsub, more people actually gave them money than if they didn't spam.
But Facebook is a different beast. you gotta keep up with the official posts or people forget about you. 3 updates in a month is... nothing. I think I may have seen one of them.
Put a whole bunch of different count down type posts to the fraga page spread over several days.:
Tell us what your favorite moment from a past Frag was, or even better post a pic!
# fraga bucks to the first person to post a pick of their XXXX year fraga pass that you still have (redeemable at the event only, you must be registered)
The first X people to register in the next hour receive X fraga bucks.
The first X to share this post receive a surprise at the event (warning the surprise may not be something you want, or it might... you never know)
Ooh those are good too!
Post a picture of the safe from the previous events and give a prize to the first registered person that can correctly name them.
Hmm just realized that LANcouver is on in a week or so.
NCIX does an ok job of posting random crap that isn't too annying on their facebook page regularly... everything from polls to contents.
Polls are always good too, gets people talking
Can everyone make sure they have Fragapalooza liked on FB? www.facebook.com/fragapalooza
I need as much exposure as I can get for the event.
Should start posting more. I've only seen two things pop up so far. one poll, and the tshirt thing.
POST MORE ON BOTH FACEBOOK AND TWITTER
Like post multiple times, every day, the twitter account looks dead almost lol
Ok ok, I'm Trying... I'm Trying. I wish Frag was my job and life, but you know, work, contract work, sports, the Wife... all get some time of the Melbosa too.

Wow, the giveaway is impressive, who's footing the bill for that?
I know right!!
hehe... its a Frag give-a-way literally. But it comes at the 400 paid seat price. So if we don't get 400 paid participants, no give-away.

Someone has to pay for it.. Is it frag? or a sponsor? I assume Frag.. Was it going to be a give away originally? Probably couldn't afford it at all without bodies...
Think of it as a Kickstarter style promotion. Or the Pre-order leveling that Steam does. But yeah it is coming out of Frag's budget.
Ah. I hope it helps draw the crowds.
As do we!
So for Tom and me and anyone else it means retweeting!
Please do! PLEASE DO!

Got my room booked!
May dust off the ol' shootin' reticle this week and see if I can still play my favourite point and click adventures :)

Having a fun time playing games with the best people on earth.
Yeah, I really need to call the hotel ::)
Do we know if we have a tent area? that is something I could do... but meh.
That might be a good question for the Fraga forums!
Also the Fraga forums are SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW today

So, what games are we looking to play?
I'm planning a lot of minecraft, don't starve, prison architect, and maybe some more portal.
Neverwinter, KSP, Minecraft, TF2, BF3, Civ 5 with Latest Expansion, Borderlands 2, L4D, L4D2, Marvel Heroes, Orcs Must Die 2, PlanetSide 2, SupCom 2 (if I can find anyone to play with), XCOM maybe.
Man! SupCom! I haven't played that in ages...
Also yeah Borderlands 2, I haven't played it yet (bought it on a Steam sale and never got to it).
Tom we should try Portal 2 Co-Op lol
I'm thinking of setting up a Minecraft PVP event if people are interested.

Might be neat.
Have you seen the Skyblock challenge map? Might be good if we can get 8 players!
So I managed to finally reserve a room. I kept not calling cause I hate calling places.. so I finally just decided to check to see if I could reserve online ::)
Mr. A: you think I should call just in case? to make sure the reservation actually happens?
I do wish it wasn't quite so expensive. $135/night or so is definitely more than I wanted to spend. :( so used to being an absolutely super cheap bastard.
I saw a double queen room apparently available for about the same amount, maybe a bit more. So we could have saved some money. but I suppose now its my snoring that bugs people? :D heh. ;)
I always like to reserve a room in advance because usually there is figure skating/hockey in town at the same time of year and the hotel fills up pretty fast, this year I was a bit later than usual (usually I reserve a room in May) but at the time of reserving a room this year I figured I was the only one going (other than Melbosa) so I didn't think about it.
I used online reservation last year and it had me booked in for an extra day, so I went back to just calling them. I think I got a better rate just calling them anyway...
On the plus side I fully expect to spend ~$500 for a kick ass 4 day event, I got a swanky bonus on my paycheck so it's all paid for.
The only thing that could make me spend more than what I set out to is if my mobo dies (because then I'd upgrade it, my cpu and my ram altogether).
Yeah, maybe I'll just call them to confirm.
I did say I'd like to go in the third post, which is as close to a yes as I ever get that early on ;D
But whatever! A good time will be had. That is all.
True dat
Glad you guys could make it! I'll have to fill you in on this years work I've had to put in. Been a very heavy load on me this year.
It sounds like it!
All over that Quakecon Pack. So many games there I wanted to play but didn't want to play full price. Now to go at Dishonored and Fall Out.

Nice! The Stollery is a sponsor, or Fraga is a supporter of the Stollery?
Just a couple more days, hey?

I can give you a ride, bud. What time and day do you need to be down there? What time and day will you want to go back? Just let me know and I'll put it in my calendar. If you're going down there Thursday, during the day is better since it's my anniversary and I'm probably expected to be around in the evening.
PM or IM or email or call or post here, your choice.
I had talked to Mr A about a possible lift with his lift. but he hasn't said anything about it the past few days, and now that he's off on vacation, I don't know that I can depend on that...
Doors open for frag at 10am it seems. Sometime about then would be good. Though my hotel check in is at 4. kind of annoying. probably just take a cab to the hotel to check in after (its like a 5min ride, so not expensive). I don't actually have to be to frag at 10 of course, but if morning/day is best for you then thats fine for me.
I really don't want to mess up your anniversary though, so don't feel like you have to do anything :)
Hey I got back today, I'll talk to the ol' man about it, our plans kind of changed
One of our good friends in Drumheller is retiring on the 100th birthday of the town so dad is going to be taking the bike down for the weekend, so I'm not sure what's a happenin' exactly.

Not 100% sure yet, we'll figure it out. I'll post on the forum tomorrow when I know for sure what's happening
I have a couple meetings in the morning already, but I've blocked off Thursday 10am-12pm on my work calendar. This way no one can schedule me for a meeting :)
I'm available to drive either or both of you down to Leduc in the morning of Thursday for Fraga if you want.

Too late this year but getting getting the word out on reddit in the correct subreddits in advance next year might help
However looking at the comments http://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/1juhjq/fragapalooza_is_coming_up_august_811th_at_leduc/
- Online gaming is much better now
- We go just to play with our friends anyway
- People have kids and it is hard to get out
- Cost is high for the younger attendees.
Hmm sounds like some of the reasons I have for not being able to attend, you know other than the travel cost.. P.S. I checked ant flying out Friday night and returning Sunday would have cost about $512. ;) Ran it past the wife and she wasn't thrilled with my spontaneous idea...
You're not supposed to run it by the wife, you're supposed to call her from Leduc and tell her you'll be back on Monday. Also, Fraga starts on Thursday, you should be flying out Wednesday during the day so that you can be rested up for the event.
Alright, that was just kidding.
Yeah, I'm surprised form how far away some people come, it's a lot of travelling and a lot of expenses.

True, but I have this unfortunate thing called work that made leaving on Wednesday impractical. I was actually however formulating a last min plan to fly out directly after work on Friday so I could get two nights of frag in...
Yeah I was joking, I totally understand having work. My family went out to a friend's lake lot yesterday to sleep over, I had to drive home to work today as there's no internet out there.

Ya low-lying lakes are bad for cell coverage.
This year was @%ing awesome.
The thing I don't get is you could go right upstairs and get beer, sit down, chat about hard drives or whatever for an hour and go back down and get yer game on.
The game I was most surprised by was Payday 2 Beta, I got the original Payday as a lot of players were on it (as the TF2 servers were mostly deserted), but Payday 2 is really good. It's tense, but not @% yer pants tense, I love it!
The only thing that went wrong for me was I screwed up my back before Fraga so...
Anyway, I spent my Fraga hangover day watching the first two seasons of Breaking Bad
BOOSH
I have to comment on the cost and youth. Every other camp, event, activity 2-4 days, supervised or not, costs more than what Frag charges. I hear the cost is too high for kid s, but then I hear what a sport camp costs or a long weekend summer camp and I wonder what they mean as those cost more than Frag always!
Oh well...
I think the price is pretty good, especially when you consider how much is provided by Fraga: tournaments, contests, random prizes, a blazing fast network...
The real challenge that I think most people were a little miffy about was just the internet pipe (probably mostly LoL which, for some reason was terrible no matter what Cova did on the network)
We need more tournaments I think.
