Title: Minecraft over the Christmas holidays
Post by: Thorin on December 10, 2013, 11:22:33 AM
So I'm taking a couple of weeks off from work and going to the US to visit my sister.  I will have a computer and internet access and I hope to put in some semi-serious hours playing Minecraft.  I have a couple more buildings to plop into Southern Junction (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-17/64/608/-1/0/0), and I think I'm going to collect more gunpowder to put on another fireworks show at or near New Year's.

Anyone else think they'll be minecrafting this December, or have you all switched over to Starbound?

Lots of games playing this holiday season

I was playing Starbound last night and then ended up playing some L4D2 last night

Over the weekend I started Starbound and beat 4 worlds in Super Mario 3D World as well as finished a fairly big project in our common build area in Minecraft. Seriously, check it out :)

Who's up for some Minecraft this weekend?

I might be able to, but for the last couple weeks my schedule has been pretty crazy.  I'm usually on for a bit around 2AM, slowly working my way towards bedrock at the quarry (down to level 49!).

Nice!!

it takes a long time to mine out a large area, that's for sure

I have some vacation time coming up as well and I want to get a lot of gaming in. I had an idea for a new build that would ask players trivia and stuff (without using command blocks)

I have to map it out, but it would be like a maze within a maze!

I want to finish my project at the building area. but I guarantee nothing. NOTHING!

I may be interested :) we'll see. It won't take a heck of a lot of work to finish mind you. its not a large build by any stretch of the imagination.

It appears that the two days I tried to give my arm a rest, was mostly ineffective, it has now spread to my hand. boooo. I may or may not play.

Oddly enough if the pain lasts for more than a couple days after resting you may be dehydrated

Drink water and take an pain medication or an anti-inflammatory (asperin/tylenol,  motrin). Remember coffee / pop / sports drinks are diuretic and work against hydration, so avoid those. I have to be careful of my coffee intake because of this and find I actually get weakness in my wrists if I get too dehydrated (among other things, like feeling overly tired). Dehydration is surprisingly common and has a lot of side effects I wasn't aware of until I went on diuretic medication...

If there is visible swelling, you definitely want to take an anti-inflammatory. With the cold weather it may be arthritic symptoms (I wouldn't be surprised with all the cold weather) something to discuss with the doctor.

I'm 99% sure its RSI. It happens regularly if I do regular 12hr shifts using the keyboard and mouse. and it slowly spreads from my arm down into my hand. Last doctor I talked to about it just said get a hand brace and take it easy.

I used to take a week off (basically did nothing but watch old tv shows and anime) to make sure it was healed up, but I have a deadline next friday and I absolutely can't miss it. so I'm going to try and pick up a hand brace tonight. But yes, I'll take some anti-inflamitories, I didn't think of it untill like a few minutes before you posted. interesting how that works. and I'll top up on water, and not drink so much caffeine and see if it all helps. I do actually drink upwards of 1-2L of water a day normally. even when not drinking cola, I drink a lot of water. always thirsty.

Thanks for the tips :)

If it is RSI you really should get a brace, or at least talk to your doctor about it

Yeah, sometimes I just over do it. It's all the starbound, work, and working on my LuaGlue (https://github.com/Tomasu/LuaGlue) project. For days I was constantly on the keyboard and mouse.

Yea but I'm saying if RSI is taking you out for a week there is treatment you can get for it (I work with a lot of people who also have RSI)

For some people all it takes is a mousepad with a rest to eliminate the problem.

if it keeps getting worse I'll have to go see the dr. can't even remotely afford to take the next week off. now, christmas? for sure.

regular hours on the computer aren't normally an issue. like 8rhs for 5 days doesn't bug me. take each evening off and the weekend, and woo. well most of the weekend.

I just hate to see people suffer with stuff like this thinking it will go away on its own. I have friends who suffered with wrist pain for years before finally getting it sorted out.

Like I say if it's knocking you out of work for a week there's a problem. And when a problem comes along? You must whip it! (http://youtu.be/IIEVqFB4WUo)

Yeah, this is why the wrist brace ;) I'll be getting one tonight at the latest.

Its fun too. its not just wrist pain. it starts as this dull ache in my forearm, then works its way down and starts to burn in my hand, and eventually the skin on my arm and right half of my hand gets super sensitive, like little electric shocks... :o yeah, its probably pretty bad at that point. BUT it rarely happens anymore. this is the first time its been this bad in probably over two years. Still though I have to get it looked at for sure now.

Ouch, sounds painful!

Yeap I would book an appointment for January now, with all the Flu around you probably wouldn't be able to get in to see the doc for a few weeks anyway.

It isn't like super painful, its more annoying. I /could/ keep using it. but it's best I don't. My livelyhood depends on it, and even if it didn't, a bunch of my hobbies depend on my arms not being useless :)

My aunt got really bad RSI working as a cashier at safeway. totally ruined her hand. multiple surgeries just to make it so she could at least move her fingers. there is no way I'm going to let it get that bad.

I might be on sometime this weekend.  I've found a few hours yesterday and an hour today to do some mining and getting some books together to build a library.

Nice!

The main problem is cows I would guess?

Or I guess you could find a stronghold and raid it's library?

Okay, I checked it out and that was absolutely AWESOME!  Now I understand why it took you so long.  For those not sure where this is, you can take the Tele-Portal from Grand Central Terminal (in Spawn City: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-3/64/18/max/0/0) to Builderton (where we built a few new things: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-861/64/-530/max/0/0), then go check out the little house: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-859/64/-638/max/0/0.  Go inside, flip the lightswitch, then go explore.

Mr. A, I couldn't figure out how to get the iron doors open so I brought along levers and planted them - I removed them afterwards.

And I understand now why it took you so long to build that little house!

I've built my library.  Turns out I had about a hundred leather, which was enough for the books I needed for the bookshelves.  It looks pretty good, too.  Gotta wait for the overviewer to update - and maybe another day I'll post pictures of the inside.  It has a little reading corner and everything :)

There should have been an item frame with a lever in it at the start. you can take the lever around with you, maybe I should add iron blocks where the locks would go

Holy moley I'll have to log in and check it out

Also that's a lot of leather to have lying around!

Oh yeah, I crafted the distress beacon but... I have no real armor / decent weapons so I'm gonna hold off fighting the UFO for a bit

I've found the secret to acquiring stuff; caves!

I found a human, I didn't attack it (like I did with the Floran oops) but he didn't want to talk, so I guess he's not a trader...

I need to find traders (so I can buy bombs / guns) I have well over 2000 pixels. I also need copper rrl rrl bad, why is it that everyone I meet has guns but there is no way to make a gun. The avian traders must be rich

I have found so much iron it's sick, platinum, gold, silver, no problem. Copper though? Very little.

ANyway, I have to go out for a bit in about 30 min but I should be on and off all afternoon

Maybe I can help you guys
