Any chance we can upgrade Usamot to the latest stable build? Every time I log on, I see a message that recommends upgrading to CraftBukkit 1.6.4.
Also, we have to beware when moving to 1.7, because baby zombies have been changed for 1.7 to fit through 1x1 openings. That means the XP farms that use zombie spawners will have baby zombies running around!
Also, Chicken Jockeys: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Chicken_Jockey
I was going to spring it on you guys at some point, but I've been lazy. They made the 1.6.4+ upgrade super simple, and the 1.7.4 beta is out, so I figure I'll do that sometime "soon"ish.
Well let us know, because we have to update our clients at home and since I have a custom installation to support multiple people on multiple machines it takes a bit of work.
Also, if you upgrade to 1.7+, I'll have to alter the Super XP Farm setup because of the little baby zombies now fitting through the mob-kneecapping hole I left. And if I'm doing that, I might also alter the drop distance for the zombos so they land with 1 hp instead of 2 hp...
It's been over a week... You pencil this in to your plans yet? I know you're playing Starbound more now, but don't forget about us poor miners and crafters :)
I haven't played /any/ games the past week or three. :(

Well I know that feeling, I had to cut into my sleep time to play Minecraft last weekend, and hoo boy was I tired on the bench...
Heh. Maintenance wise, its A LOT easier to update starbound.

Heh. I'll /try/ to get it done "soon". But I can't guarantee nothing. Maybe this week?
I'm looking forward to the MC update as well
I was thinking, there's a separate proxy minecraft server that lets you setup multi server MC servers. So we could keep the existing world, and have portals to entirely new sub servers where we can put the new world.
I'm wondering if we want to bother? It'd get all of the new 1.7 content right around spawn in the new world. And they'd be separate servers, so performance would probably be better than slapping a multi-dimension mod on bukkit I would think. And the servers could actually be on separate servers (virtual or physical). Also I think that proxy server gets updated quicker than the more complex bukkit mods.
Not decided yet. If we want to bother, I don't mind. Otherwise, meh!
I'm interested in this idea for sure, I don't mind starting on a new map either as long as our existing stuff lives on in some form.
I kind of like the idea of a smaller map as well anyway, no more loading a multi-gig map!
I honestly don't know what's a better solution for having multiple worlds. I like the idea of having a transit dimension which is just a big room with portals to other dimensions, one of which is our current Usamot and another of which is the FUTURE USAMOT OF TOMORROW NOW </announcer voice>. It'd be really cool if we had overviewer maps for both, too. And we should build a nice transit dimension room, and then collaborate on the layout of spawn on the new world, definitely make it a modern-looking small town or something to start with.
If we started a new server+map could we link it back later?
I don't know about you guys but I would love to play on a fresh server
With any multi server setup, the only important thing is that they are all the same version. But yeah, I was thinking about having the new 1.7/1.8 world on a new instance, and keep the old map up as the gateway to it. but we could also have a much smaller mostly read-only hub world to go between the other worlds.
K, let's do that
I think we could get more people playing on a fresh new map with all sorts of new cool stuff to play with.
What do you guys think?
Either way sounds good to me, so long as the servers aren't stressed.
I like the island heavy maps like the present Usamot.

I think we all agree that we want the old Usamot still accessible, but have no problem with restarting on a new map. Whether that's done with a proxy server or a bukkit plugin doesn't matter, I don't think. Whatever's easier for Tom to set up / maintain.
I do think we need to coordinate a nice modern town build near spawn so that people have somewhere nice to start from.
And if we start on a new map, can we make sure that we're not in a snowy or desert area to begin? The snow gets on everything and makes builds not look as good, and if we're in desert then people will strip-mine the sand and it'll end up looking bad. My favourite biome would be some kind of grasslands with a forest a little ways away, but as long as it's not snowy or sandy I'll be okay.
Tom, is there anything we can do / anything you need help with to get a new map set up?
You guys can look for awesome seeds for the new map.
Otherwise you can add a few extra hours to every day so I have time!
AwesomeWorld!!11 gives a pretty nice spawn.
Is there a way to get the seed of the world in single player? If there is, I'll make, like, a hundred with random seeds and see if a good one comes out.

Yeah what else will he do when he is watching TV at 3AM on a week day>>> :P :D
I'm usually asleep by then. Although looking for nice seeds might keep me up...
Are there any specific wishes for a seed? Beyond not in snow or sand? I really like the idea of starting on a plain with trees in one direction and hills in the other, and a nice beach on a large lake in another direction...
Or we could try one of these seeds where you start in water?
If we had a mesa somewhat near by that would be cool. Two preferably, one so it can look cool, and another we can tear to shreds. ;)
Bukkit's recommended build is still for 1.6. Mesas are part of 1.7. To get 1.7, we'd have to run vanilla or run a dev build of Bukkit. Is that something we want to do, or are we going to wait with moving to 1.7 until Bukkit's recommended build is there?
I'm interested in being current with MC, but i am not a heavy player. So take that weight with my request.
I don't mind running the beta builds. It's the dev ones I don't want to mess with.
Mountains, not sure I like the amplified but in general it looks like some cool mountains generate now.
Is it possible to set up a temp server and then port the map over later?
Sure, but why would you want to bother? The same seed will always generate the same map in the same version of minecraft.
I think because he wants to play on it now, but then not lose his builds when it's moved over later...
Okay, I'll watch for mountains when I'm looking for a good seed. I'm gonna start tonight.
Sounds interesting:

I guess it's Starbound tonight for me eh eh eh
Ooh I got my MagicLauncher updated and started poking around the new version... it's pretty cool
This is going to sound really lame, but the seed STARBOUND is actually a pretty cool world (even though I spawned in a puddle)
Check it out!
Finding a good seed is turning out to be a pain in the neck. It's hard to find both a mesa and extreme hills close together. I think I'm giving up.
Savanna Plateaus are kinda cool, though. And the snow at higher elevations instead of the whole biome is neat, too.

Oh, heh. I also heard about it via a youtube minecraft thing. I didn't bother to check either one out yet though ;)
What is our target? 1.7.4 or 1.7.2 ?
If we're sticking with bukkit, then 1.7.2.
1.7.2 seems to have the best client side mod support so it is probably the best bet.
The all biome seed has a major issue of the spawn being surrounded by HUGE amounts of desert to get to the other bioms and it has very few trees near spawn.
Probably not the best bet then.
6929581978667913065 is decent, mesa isn't to far from spawn, decent area around spawn and some interesting mountains.

Ya I think it has a great simple spawn and it isn't to far to get to some new interesting biomes if you test it and fly out 500-1000 blocks in any direction.
Makes me think about planning a nice spawn and central hub for rail and travel.

We
definitely need to coordinate a nice spawn and central hub. I'd really like to see a central train station with tele-portals like we have set up in the current map. That sure makes it easier to travel around.
It's gonna be weird starting over with nothing, though.
Here's what I think we need at or near spawn:
- a travel district, with train station and tele-portals
- a farm district with some fields of wheat and carrots and potatoes
- a ranch district with animal pens
- a residential district, with some houses with beds and chests
- a factory district, with a couple of buildings with furnaces, at least one of which is automated with hoppers and at least one of which is manual for people who want to get the xp
I also think we need to set up an XP farm at some point...
I think we should lay out a walkway / street grid for the first XXX blocks in all directions of the spawn making things nice and easy for noobs. Out side spawn city things can be free range.
I found the layout of our original city rather confusing to start
Man this sort of makes me want to sit down and play again for hours
I still get lost in the old spawn.
Dang as long as you don't start while I'm away haha

Hence why I think a boring planned grid to start would be a really good idea. Or at the very least set north, east, south, west roads radiating from spawn to make navigation easy.
Yeah, I think roads going north, east, south, and west from the precise spawn point are a great idea. Maybe gravel roads that go 100 blocks? I'd make them three blocks wide, that way the exact center of the intersection can be the spawn point.
It would also give us four quadrants near spawn, where we could set up farming/ranching, residential, transportation, and factory areas.

The only problem with waiting is that it might end up like our End Run - keeps getting postponed.
FYI Spawn is also a protected area of about 38 blocks so the first users to spawn in should outline this protected area so we can more cleanly mark that out and maybe surround it with some walls for basic protection.
I see some consensus forming here... Tom what are your thoughts?
Seed: 6929581978667913065

Hehe. We'll see ;) It's a bit of work to set everything up ;)
Let's do the end run next weekend
But yeah I'm looking forward to a new map
woo woo
I'm out of town next weekend, going to Red Deer for a ringette tournament.
I'd love to start now, I actually have free-ish time tomorrow.
How will we know how far out the protected area of spawn is? I think we should make it a flattened area with fencing, or something. Or even a nice glassed-up building. Can we make it monster-proof?
Tom, let us know if there's anything we can do personally or financially to help get stuff set up...

http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Spawn#Player_spawning
QuoteOn multiplayer servers, a 33x33 block area centered at the default spawn point, and spanning the full height of the map, is "protected". Players, other than server operators, cannot place or destroy blocks in the protected area, use doors, activate switches other than pressure plates, or open chests or other blocks which contain items. Creepers can still destroy terrain in the protected area and TNT placed outside of the protected area will destroy surrounding blocks as usual. Along with this, portals from the Nether can connect to the protected area, water/lava/fire can spread from outside into the protected area, and pistons can push blocks inside as well. Players can place blocks on the edge of the protected area if placed against the side of a block on the outside of the area. However, if the edges of the protected area are avoided, small, indestructible structures can be built. Paintings that are put up can be removed by players in the safe zone.
Should be fairly easy to mark out by having a non OP player spawn in and digg around the protected zone to mark it out.
I checked out that seed, couldn't find a mesa or even a desert for sand for glass.

Here are the two seeds I suggested...
4031384495743822299 - All bioms within 2000 blocks of spawn however spawn has hardly any trees you start near a huge desert
6929581978667913065 - A more tree friendly sees with a measa in a reasonable distance, smaller deserts.
FYI screen shots attached are about 1500x1500 blocks.
If still not happy just down load AMIDST (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/626786-v36-amidst-strongholds-village-biome-etc-finder-174/) and hit control-r until you find something interesting...
Another again at about a 1500x1500 zoom so reasonable travel to the visible bioms.

I've marked out what I think would be good limits to set on the initial spawn city. It's big enough to hold everything that would be needed and apart from felling the trees within it's limits, it wouldn't encroach too much on any wilderness.
QuoteI think we should make it a flattened area with fencing, or something. Or even a nice glassed-up building. Can we make it monster-proof?
The area I've marked could be fenced, though it would take a while. The trees that would need to be felled to connect the two open areas would provide a lot of wood for fencing.
Oh, I can turn off most of the spawn protection, I think it can be shrunk to a 1x1 block size. I think its far less annoying that way.

As for the creepers we already have damage protection set for them on the current server..
Any feedback on my seeds? I know everyone likes to be on all at once however I don't think we will be timed that well. My free time comes and goes and is all over the clock.
I think with a new server we'll see a lot more people online
Yeah, I'll still have a hard time finding free time that isn't supposed to be sleeping time to play. Probably well into March. Should be better come April, but maybe I'll just have to start planning a weekly game night and put it in my calendar or something...
Sorry Lazy, haven't had a good look at the suggested seeds yet.
I like both of those seeds.
Playing around I did generate a bunch of "interesting" or "challenging" start spawn locations such as starting on a small island in a chain of small islands, etc, but those would require a long equipmentless swim for resources.
Lenny has already put one into an over viewer render... unless he beats me to it I might do something along the same lines and setup a poll.
If you all want to get on Skype or Google hangouts I can record with Fraps, next Yogscast maybe haha?

Yeah, it took me a while to figure out what colours meant what on your screenshots, that's why I did the detailed info. Kind of lists why I think it's a good seed for what we're looking for - mesa and extreme hills and desert nearby (desert for glass, of course!). I also like having savanna somewhere kinda close because it's an interesting new biome.

humongous mesa
several extreme hills biomes nearby, I checked in Minecraft and at least a couple of mountains, one higher than the clouds
spawn on a forested hilly island with easy access to the mainland
savanna's a little further and not that big
desert's a couple thousand blocks away
HUMONGOUS MESA
See the screenshot - the red/pink area to the northeast, east, southeast, and south is one giant mesa/mesa plateau/mesa plateau F set of biomes.
edit: grey is extreme hills (aka mountains), darker greens are different types of forests or forested hills, light green are plains, cyan is swamp, orange is desert.

There's not much in the way of wildlife at that spawn compared to some of the others however.
not really narrowing at this point.
There are some things we really NEED near spawn:
- trees!
- Animals for food till farming is established
- horses would be nice (plains biom near by)
- sand (because glass is nice)
- mesa (lots of clay for fancy builds)
Am I missing anything?

No, spawning in any of the treeless biomes kinds sucks.
I've been on worse seeds...
Small island, nothing around for miles, single tree. It was like Minecraft Survival Island!

Yeah, I think Im leaning towards the last one myself, but I play so infrequently its not my call.
The one with lots of ocean near spawn?
I'm kind of liking the ones with more land, that way we can clump up more closely (at least at first)
I know if I saw an ocean in front of me I'd want to make a boat... and we know what happens then hehe
If we narrow it down to maybe 3 I can take some more shots... Using a mod that does the nice isometric shots IN GAME so i can do them with shaders etc... doesn't show up so much in these wide shots.
Leaning toward http://imgur.com/a/7oDT5#11 after making the spawn images, has plains, trees, animals, and extreme hills near it.
Lets narrow it down and put it to a vote. There are some features just out of view in these that are really nice, but it would have taken me too long to fly around and generate them for all of the seeds... I am willing to do that for maybe 3.

Actually I don't remember now :(
I have had very little sleep the past several days due to various reasons. running on near empty. But I'm almost done with a lot of that. Soon I'll have some exciting news I hope :D
Last night while waiting for someone to come online, I managed to migrate all of my services off my CoreNetworks box, so I can finally cancel that money hole.
Woo that's good to hear Tom, back into a regular cycle is always good.
Lazy yeah! 11 looks really good to me as well
Can I get a third on this :D
I'll vote with concensus. :) 11 does look good though.
To quote Demoman
LET'S DOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIT!
:)
I'll try and squeeze the work in... but the next few weeks are likely to be somewhat busy for me.... like I dont know if I've ever been this busy :o maybe late at night and weekends I can find the time.
I would like to see some other options or at least two to go into more detail on.. May of seeds have cool stuff just out of the spawn area, but we all know how important spawn is until we industrialize building and transport systems.
Thanks for doing all the investigation, Lazy. I'll be happy with whatever you choose.
Now if only I could find time to play :(
Tom, have you figured out / decided on a strategy to make us able to warp from the new map to the old map? I'm gonna miss my stacks of diamonds :P

You know for that to work both would need to running the same version... I think there is some risk of the world gen going a little off with the resent updates.
Yes, both maps/servers have to run the same version, or at least very close versions, or the client just won't connect.
This makes me think though, anyone have time to build out a nice portal/hub world? I was thinking of something in the void, on a big platform in the middle with places to put portals (I'm not sure how the portal system for this works yet, so just leave spaces for places to put things...).
Doing it in creative is fine. Go all out!

Pretty sure I'm going with BungieMC/SpigotSuite. I've heard good things about it. Each world is a separate instance of the server, so things can be split up if needed, and shouldn't greatly effect each other even when on the same server.
Sure, I've wanted to get my hands on World Edit for a long time
Maybe it will be something I do this weekend
Of course you don't have to do what I say. if you figure out something even better, go for it :)
A void just makes it harder for people to mess with. Though I could just make the hub world protected. so its not really that important. You're the au^Hrtistic one!
Nyaaa!
So we have some idea and preference on a SEED.
We agree on a version that is currently stable and well supported.
Personally I have an itch to play but don't want to invest in the current world and I am excited to start new.
Heeyyyy, had some time to at least get the 1.7.2 instance up. I may or may not work on the spigot setup today. mc2.tomasu.org. standard plugins are setup, ops and whitelist should be as well. spawn protection has been set to 1 column.
let me know if anything is borked.
It may or may not go up or down today depending on the whims of GOD. (aka, if I need to to get spigot working, if I bother)

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...
now I gotta go to ringette and can't play :(
Sundays are not the most ideal day for me as well but I think I might pop on tonight and punch some trees.. Maybe light up and fence off the spawn a little if I have time.
SWEET!
Before spending much time on there do we have creeper explosions protected against for buildings?
I'm not sure if the no griefing gamerule is enabled. You're an op, so you can do that when you're on if it isn't.
HOLY FRICKLE FRACKLE
I should have checked the forums earlier!
Mr. A, you'd better get on there, you're five hours behind! :D

FYI Torn I was extra shocked by the time last night as the phone clock on my desk was still an hour off...
I thought I was logging out at a reasonable midnight not 1AM. You and your 2AM gaming... GRRR :)
Geeze, and I thought I was tired this morning.. I think I've got nothin on Lazy :o
Then again, I went to sleep at 8pm, got up at 12am, then did some @% for 5 hours, then went back to bed at 5am, to wake up at 8:30... feh. even then it was hard to get back to sleep.

To clarify Thorin is the one who was up till 2AM (mountain), that is 1AM (pacific) my time... However I did get out of bed at 6:40AM for work my time.

Same diff. I know you have to get up early do deal with commute times. :(
Ha ha! Yeah, kinda funny that you just stayed on and kept gaming... I remember these times from last night (from looking at the computer clock):
8:39pm - several people online at the same time,
10:14pm - the game's taped, should I quit now and watch it? nah
11:15pm - hmm, getting late, remember to go to bed on time Thorin
11:48pm - almost midnight, just gotta build a basement for the Survival Shack
12:18am - oh crap, it changed to "am", well, just need some more mining done
1:56am - uhh, Bones, I gotta go it's 2am (logged off shortly after)
2:33am - finished looking at the list of new things in MC 1.7.2 and finally went to bed
Then I saw 3:30am tick by on the alarm clock as I couldn't stop thinking about how to change the spawn area for the better...
DAMN YOU MINECRAFT
This is not my fault.

I think both Thorin and I are happy with the sleep deprived consequences.
I'm not goku, but I'm just sayin.
I am not blaming you at all, I'm a grown man and can set an alarm for myself. When I ignore it, that's my own fault.
But damn, starting a new map with awesome geography nearby is awesome.
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! <-- from the lego movie if you haven't see it yet

That song so made me laugh... then when my wife couldn't get it out of her head it made me laugh even more.
Such a great movie that Lego Movie is.
