Tech Chat / Trying Linux Desktop Again
Last post by Lazybones - January 05, 2026, 11:51:13 PMSo after having great success with our Steam Deck I decided I should try Linux as my desktop at home as for the most part 99% of what I do on my home PC is browsing and steam games.
After loading up a few of the most popular distros or failing to load up some of the popular distros I have settled on CachyOS for now.
1. Easy to get all the latest HW acceleration including H.265 in browsers
2. Can seemingly install anything, not limited to a narrow package manager.
3. Has a DEEP wiki, which is where I found out that my MB chipset has a SLEEP state bug and they included a complete workaround in the wiki.. (had entered sleep hanging the system in EVERY distro I tested and found the answer in the Arch Wiki
4. limine boot loader with brfs file system means I can boot into previous OS snapshots easily if I mess the whole system up as well.
Going to try and use this is my home daily driver for a while and see how it goes.
was super bummed that SLEEP of all things was causing the system to completely hang in all distros, I always seems to have the strangest luck with hardware compatibility.
If interested I have a B550 chipset motherboard

Was impressed with the arch wiki, both in the fact my issue was covered but also that it clearly documented how to test, confirm, and workaround the issue clearly enough without jumping details.

However this project has been working on getting the original reboot from the original broadcast digital masters and they have recently succeeded is getting ONE of every episode at nearly 95% quality!
