Well after 17 years I finally bought myself a new receiver for my living room.  You see my WD Live is starting to go... throwing memory errors and random lockups, so I started last week hunting for a new device to replace it.  Well man it is damn hard to find Optical out units with Plex client on them. Most are discontinued or HDMI only.  So then I started just looking for anything to replace it with and thought I could buy an HDMI to Optical switch box (which Monoprice sells).  Then I was looking at NUCs and XBMC (now KODI) devices, but stopped after exhausting that.  So I thought "guess I have to buy another WD" even though WD has been discontinued by end of year.

Well then I was sitting in my living room and looking at the mess of cables I have running to make my home theatre experience work.  I have a Rocket Fish HDMI switcher, and Two Optical Switches just to make everything work with my 17 year old Marantz SR5000.  Well that was it and I decided it was time to buy something new and move into the HDMI audio age.

So I bought myself an Marantz SR5009 after much research and price comparison.  While it may not have the latest in ATOM speaker sound, or Audyssey MultEQ XT32, but hey for my upgrade it is going to have a hell of lot of new things I wasn't getting currently.  Then at the recommendation of some here in the office I settled on a Nexus Player for my new Plex (and others) client to replace the WD.  I should have it all running by this weekend, as I am just waiting for the HDMI 2.0 cables and Nexus Player to show up.

As a side tid-bit... about 3 months ago I brought my Marantz SR5000 in to NAIT to fix the rear audio that was cutting in and out.  The Electronics department opened it up and fixed a bunch of cold solder points.  Why do I tell you this?  Well when I went to buy my Marantz from the store the sales guy asked me why the purchase.  So I told him that I had this model of Marantz from my college days.  He asked me if it was original and I told him just about the fix a few months back.  He said too bad as he thought if it was still original and working he could get Marantz to buy it for around $2000 as a collectors item... turns out it was the first SR Series receiver they ever made.

Now I get to fiddle with things like automated surround sound setup and OSD for a receiver setup.  OOOOOOOOOooooooooooo.....

So why a Nexus Player and not a Roku?

Also, cool little story about your old Marantz.

I have a Roku... I don't like the Plex Channel on it as much as I do the Plex App one on the Google Play store.  I use a Roku 2 XS in my bedroom.

The Roku is a safe dependable choice but I agree with Melbosa its UI is anything but sexy compared to other clients.
