PSYGNOSIS GAME BOX ART -- ahhh such fond memories ( and their classics were published for both Atari ST and Amiga -- one of the rare topics where the "war" between fans could have a ceasefire ;) )

I remember the owl logo, but most of the games had more normal box art from the days I was playing them most.

Mr. Analog

In the days before game reviews when box art could sell a game all by itself! :)

It's amazing to think that it wasn't really until the late 80s that game review publications even existed, and even then were highly questionable at times

Games journalism isn't even really 30 years old when I think about it, that's pretty weird in itself

The mid-1980s until the early 1990s were the best because hardware was still weak enough that GAMEPLAY and original storylines could produce a sleeper hit, and literally launch a dev house into the upper echelon of game producers.

And also, you had the monthly magazines with A CD FILLED WITH GAME DEMOS! Remember those? A *CD* as in 650mb of storage. With multiple games, fully playable demo levels.

Instead of a 16gb download for what is often just a hgh-polished product.

There are so many games out now, some with a lot of real depth / surprises to 'em. Lots of indie studios that have rocketed to the big time with nothing more than Gamemaker: Studio (cough Toby Fox cough) and a lot of good ideas. And we have a big ol' internet to get them from now...

I don't miss the days of going to the store and finding no games for my Macintosh, then going home and playing the same NES game over and over because it was all I had haha

Amazingly, this article was back in September of 2016**.

Somehow the BoingBoing web app only recently went viral.

**I can't imagine what other more interesting things had captured the attention of both the MSM and the internet subculture dwellers...
