Okay so it looks pretty, but not nearly as useful as the "3D Windows" stuff we've seen demo'ed lately - since in those case you can actually "turn" the windows to make room etc.

Excuse me now, while I go purchase a bowl of Jello. For some reason suddenly have a craving for some. :P

It's mostly demonstrating the power of an OpenGL desktop.

So...an OpenGL desktop brings nothing to productivity?  Glad we settled that early.

This is true, but with Longhorn we get the uber and equally useless sidebar.

In all honesty, im not all that excited for Longhorn.  XP has treated me well.

Look at the flipsde to it though.  My boss had the nuts to say that OSX will beocme the defacto operating system in the years to come....i simply shrugged and laughed.

Suppose its 2002 and i buy XP (im guessing the year), it cost me $299.
Suppose my evil twin buys OSX and its upgrades in the same time frame (OSX, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3) = $800~ ...add in the upcoming 10.4 and your near $1000 in Operating Systems.

An OS every 4-5 years, just like the console timeline seems fine to me.

"Desktop" metaphor + Physics = Bumptop! Not quite as nice a GUI interface as the 3D wiggly windows thingie, then again it would be like a builtin game when your "desk" gets messy ;)

Eh. the gnome demo there probably just uses Xgl, which at the moment, is using the first created backend that requires you run two X servers, one that runs on the other to provide the fancy graphics. Really quite lame. Soon though I hope the Xegl backend will be finished which is a major rewrite/port of X to GL. Which means no more crappy unaccelerated X whoopee.
