If anyone one of us is interested in the game, you might want to look into the pre-order on this one: http://www.lotro.com/index.php?page_id=100&utm_source=Launcher&utm_medium=LNCHR&utm_campaign=Turbine

Key benefits:

  • Open Beta Access - And get to keep your player(s) from beta in release.
  • Reduced Pricing Scheme - Get the game at a cheaper monthly rate than those who buy it after release.
  • One-time-shot Pricing - Thought this was interesting.  Pay a large one time purchase price and have life-time access to the game.
  • Bonus Items - Nothing new for preorders, although this time seems that the items might actually be more usefull than just moving a bit faster than everyone else or having a little friend to adventure with (without any real powers to help you at all).

Hobbits?
But, do they have Giant Eagles? Certain Colberts need to know...

Its still in closed beta at the moment which as I understand it is still under an NDA.  But what I have read it is very similar to WoW's play style but with some nice changes and advancements.  Supposed to be very close to the LOTR universe, just more condensed in area for game play.  I know I am strongly considering getting into it myself.

I wonder how magic works, magic was a fairly rare commodity in the Tolkienverse.

Your right of-course.  Other than the race of wizards, there isn't much magic to be had in the tolkien world.  Check out the character classes here:

Closest one to a Magic guy would be the Lore-master.

Cool! Like a bard?

Ministral is more like your bard.  No health in the game, you have Moral, which helps out the classes do what they do like Ministral and Lore-master.  I would say Lore-master is like a historian, natures friend and scientest in one.  I hope it pulls off the power of Magic without actual magic.
