I remember from high school that hitting them with enough downward force normally popped them open.

Hah, I actually remember one or two of my old combinations. one was 26, 28, 34. Actually, just one. I can't seem to remember the other Maybe I will later when I'm trying to fall asleep or something.

The fun thing was that you didn't even have to get the numbers all that close. Some of the time, a combination like 24, 30, 32 would work. Then there were the locks you could just twist on the spinner and yank it open...
