In an odd bit of news, it looks like Neuromancer will be headed to the big screen:

That would be cool! Well, if they manage to maintain the story...

I have to say, I don't quite see the point of a Neuromancer movie.

While it was a transformative reading experience back in 1984, the book's ideas and style have been pretty much sucked dry by dozens and dozens of movies in the intervening years, including Gibson's own Johnny Mnemonic. That just leaves Gibson's electric prose, which I doubt will translate well to the screen.

Of course, in a universe where a movie adaptation of the game "Battleship" is going to hit the screens, I guess I can't complain all that much.

I wonder if they'll be able to turn this into a groundbreaking movie the same way that the book was a groundbreaking book. Much of the cyberpunk scifi was envisioned or highly influenced by Gibson's books. The matrix as a word was used in Shadowrun and several other roleplaying games within five years of first appearing in Gibson's books, and The Matrix movies were clearly based on this alternate reality he proposed.

Much of Neuromancer and Count Zero and even Mona Lisa Overdrive have been copied in future works. Unfortunately, for those that did not grow up and read those books in the 80s, it might make no sense why the "old geezers" are getting excited at yet another plug-your-brain-in movie.

Damnit, now I wanna read all the short stories and then re-read the books, and then play me some Shadowrun!
