Planet Hunters is a "citizen science" project that sets its players at the task of searching for discrepancies and weirdnesses in the data supplied by the Kepler space telescope which may hint at existing, undiscovered planets.
Computer analysis is generally hugely helpful with this sort of thing, but computers lack good pattern-detection ability, which can be vital for noticing the way in which light falling on orbiting planets varies. Human eyes are therefore a valuable source of information.

Any interesting-looking patterns in the data are flagged by the player. Then, if the data is marked by a number of Planet Hunters, it's looked at in greater detail by the science teams involved in the project.
