Yes, that's right, the Stanley Kubrick film that came out in 2001 and most people "didn't get".

YES THAT'S RIGHT i said it was a KUBRICK MOVIE not a Spielberg* movie.

#MoviesWithMikeyFOREVER because I like smiling during movie reviews -- especially such DARK movies as this!

*PS: I still remember how some folks called it a "typical Spielberg ending" -- yeah Steven is SO known for downer endings. yeah whatever...

It was so schlocky and disjointed though I lost a lot of respect for Spielberg on that one

Might be one of those "better a second viewing" type of films. It was MARKETED very inaccurately/dishonestly, it was not the type of film I think the theatre-goers at the time were expecting based on promotions.

At the time I came out I was expecting it to be more Indiana Jones and less Close Encounters. This films seems to be the type where the themes and takeaways are more subtle and become deeper and clear only with a little analysis (like most excellent low-budget but sleeper-hit indie film of the last decade, including/especially in the SciFi film), rather than being simple and obvious based on just the visuals happening on screen in a big budget epic (like a Michael Bay film).

Hope you watch the Movies With Mikey I linked to in OP -- it is not just hilarious and thought-provoking, it also clarifies tons of myths about the production itself. Including/especially the ENDING. (Hint: it was 100% Kubrick. Ditto for Robin Williams as "Einstein".)

I've watched it several times and the most frustrating part about it is what it could have been rather than what it was.

There are a lot of elements that work really well but there is an overwhelming amount of nonsense interspersed throughout that means nothing and serves no purpose.

I expected some filler here and there but it is excessive and worst of all uninteresting.

I didn't hate it, but basically it isn't spielberg's type of film. He tried to stick to the original screenplay, but i think he just isn't capable of that sort of movie.
<Zapata Prime> I smell Stanley... And he smells good!!!

Mr. Analog

I finally watched the video, I was expecting it to say something new.

I think the problem is exactly that Spielberg was trying to make a Kubrick film, there's this sort of disassociation between the two styles which, for me, makes it particularly grating.

Sort of like watching post-Jim Henson voiced muppets, something not quite right...

Also I'm not a fan of the quick-edits and asides in that video... it makes me wish there was a Plinkett Review of it now

So we agree ;D Mostly.

But I still somewhat enjoyed it. It was odd, that's for sure.

I put it in the same category as Bicentennial Man, good ideas bad horrible disjointed boring execution

Why is it so hard to make a good movie about A1

I like bicentennial man :( It flows like many scifi stories I've read. Maybe not ideal for a movie, but it doesn't feel too disjointed to me. You get used to jumps in time in scifi.

The jumps I don't mind it's the actual storytelling that I felt could be better crafted, in both movies.

Maybe I'll watch them again but I still feel like Steak Sauce: The Movie could be edited into a much tighter movie

EX MACHINA

...but it's more about the meaning of humanity and stuff.

There's a MoviesWithMikey about that film too! :)
