Mr. Analog

James Gunn the powerhouse behind the Guardians of the Galaxy films was given the boot by Disney allegedly over decade-old tweets

As you can imagine it's a giant mess:

Well, at least we got two decent movies before things got dumb

...any day now: the hyper-sensitive SJWs driving the Disney crazy train officially recall all DVDs of Hanna Montana due to Miley's use of waccy tobaccy.

Edit: actually skimmed the [ABC] news story.
FFS the tweet is scrubbed and account deleted -- now the compliant public can't even learn what horrible wrongthink is to be memoryholed from our collective vocabulary! :sigh:

The out of touch elite and hair trigger outrage mob on the left keeps eating its own.

^ The REAL reason for Gunn being fired, I suspect.

Read the whole conversation. ( archived @ http://archive.is/46EOH )

That happened July 18th.

Days later, a known troublemaker for years, hired for GOTG with that rep... and yet now shaming and firing for immaturity years ago?

I don't buy it. More like this: message must be clear to others opening minds who might #WalkAway

Can't let more people with impact on culture encourage the public to question things. Like Mark Duplass was doing. Or Kanye.

Gotta keep them on the ideological plantation. They must stay "pure" or to hell with them.

Yikes.

Later today I did see a screenshot of the Gunn 2 dozen pedo "jokes".

This might be more than just weird stuff being said or poor taste jokes, or being misunderstood...

See the convo going on right now in here... (just one example of many twitter convos right now, see hashtags above)

...public disclosure of a significant enduring private evil might actually be happening right now before our eyes. Frodo and Feldman are just a few who have tried sounding the alarm... are the masses finally going to listen? As unbelievable as the truth might be...

Apparently archive.is fails with url mobile.twitter.com -- it omits the full convo.

Here is Patton's tweet with www.twitter thus the replies too:

See also: comedian Michael Ian Black

From the same sick mind, he also wrote several children's books. One is called "Naked", about a toddler who doesn't want to keep his clothes on. https://www.amazon.com/Naked-Michael-Ian-Black/dp/144246738X

And Black's "joke" tweets on this subject are less voluminous than Gunn's were. Identical theme/message though. A recurring pattern for years.

I am more supportive of "offensive speech" than most, but I draw the line at recurring references to life-shattering violence against innocent children.

I'm confused by your stance, Darren. At first you're trying to say it's all "SJWs" and how they're forcing people to stay ideologically pure and watch what they say (and that forcing James Gunn to be fired is a symptom of that), and then you go off about how you believe in free speech but people who joke about nasty things with children deserve what they get.

It's almost like you're stuck in an echo chamber where you only repeat the talking points being fed to you.

An adult will change his mind when confronted with new information.

I admit I have not always acted like an adult -- so, touche.

ITT I speculated at first, then adapted as new data became available.

My first impressions were wrong, instead of nuking my OP I kept it because that is the honest thing.

But my OP because it was based on the info I was aware of at the time. I theorized based on events and the current cultural climate.**

Later, new info made me change my position. That is nothing to do with echo chambers.

Won't go deeper, but a lot of what I posted ITT is connected to other stuff going on, that is completely ignored or dismissed by mainstream news sources, so much of the average member of the public would not be aware.

So I was stating a possibility (hope) that this virally-shared event (Gunn) is a catalyst for some of that stuff being more known (aka disclosure).
But for now I will not say anything more about thar stuff -- tbh because of how I am guessing folks like you will likely presume/judge on the surface of it. (As evidenced by your "assumption wrapped in a question" response -- and nothing personal against you, I would react the same with your knowledge.)

Whether you know it or not I am actually able to be very appreciative of various contrary viewpoints even if I seem vocal/passionate about one in particular. Because over time I have adapted, my mind can be changed with evidence -- which is certainly not true of many people who, indeed, CHOOSE to only remain in their echo chamber, who eventually get to a dehumanizing level of "us vs them". Damn dangerous, longterm.

But it takes effort to avoid that, being human, being tribal. It is damn challenging to actually give serious consideration to a contrary POV, without actually subscribing to it (or being accused of that!)

I feel hope for humanity because many of us are now making the effort, and it is worth the effort, the alternative to open mindedness and some kind of unity is quite horrifying longterm.

**cliffs re. "cultural climate":

As tribalism is growing via social media, and BOTH "mainstream" and "alternative/social" media mostly name-call and dismiss the opposition, often either via outright lie, omit context/details, or knock down strawmen, there are finally some "celebrity" folks like Mark Duplass -- a "left" indie actor/writer -- who are committed to hearing "extreme" views from all sides.

Mark has taken a lot of flack from "his side" for even LISTENING to "the enemy". He has choswn to invest his own personal time to be interviewed by people who are dismissed as strawmen by ideologues on either side. The blowback was recently the most severe when he *shudder* suggested others might do the same.

Gunn recently tweeted approval of this approach, saying others should maybe follow Mark's lead... then this firing happened.

At first I did not see the actual tweets, therefore I speculated it was yet another over-reaction by hyper sensitive tribal left who are "eating their own" right now (see how they shamed Bill Maher for even having guests from the "extreme right", like Milo Yiannopolis a while ago, or Ben Shapiro last month.

Or, as an example that is less blatantly political, how they attacked Stephen Fry for the Munk debate in spring 2018 -- Fry committed the sin of arguing FOR free speech. How ironic free speech was used to denounce him; Fry being not a "rightwing ideologue" by any stretch, but the "left" still shamed him for somehow giving a voice to "wrongthink" from the oppoaing side.

So I was seeing a familiar sequence of events with the Gunn firing.

Later I understood the bigger story, apparently some notorious folks on the "right" dug up and spread a bunch of these disgusting-topic "jokes" (which, objectively, recurred over multiple years and thousands of tweets, by a 40 year old man, not some college kid). And not just from Gunn. Not even just from well known comedians.

So I expressed my disgust and concern. And I personally say a line is crossed here; the volume and frequency lead me to believe this is more than an occasional source of shocking humor, but likely something darker (and maybe more tragic -- sorry if "deserve" was the impression I gave!) behind it. Others can be less presumptuous, fine, I won't dismiss you as a person if you are more skeptical...

But I hope people at least don't be instantly dismissive because of WHO did the digging and spreading here (which the mainstream media originally tried to do!)

Shooting the messenger is exactly what the current culture overall seems stuck on doing; I get that divisiveness gets eyeballs and increases audiences... and strengthens echo chambers. But many of us are tired of that, of even being an active part of that. Many of us are hoping to get the conversations going on the actual messages.

DR. JORDAN PETERSON is among many others in the so-called "IDW" helping to keep people talking and thinking; long-form conversations are building bridges. I hope it is not too late to save civilized society. "Rule #9" from JP's book is what I am personally trying to follow ITT and in general:

"Assume That The Person You?re Listening To Might Know Something You Don?t"

https://akirathedon.bandcamp.com/album/12-rules-for-life-the-album

(How else can we ever learn anything?)

PS: being human, and because of my acknowledged history (which Thorin is certainly right to associate ITT!) I will stumble at times; the "Be Precise In Your Speech" rule is something else I am trying to focus on! Honestly wonder if ITT you noticed a difference...

This is the kind of stuff I was referencing when I mentioned Kanye questioning things...

jerry shenk @jerryshenk
Isn't this try the way thought is supposed to work. We should be honest enough to agree on some things and disagree on others. Never heard the term "monolithic thought" before but, that has become a problem.
(in reply to...)
KANYE WEST @kanyewest
I haven't done enough research on conservatives to call myself or be called one. I'm just refusing to be enslaved by monolithic thought.

PS: ^ hey Lazy, Mr. A -- I wonder, could this be our C++ instructor from 20 years ago!?

...and speaking of 20 years ago, now THIS is the kind of reasonable predictions scifi authors should be making. Eerie. And somehow not unrealistically ambitious.

Found on the above "Mr. Shenk"'s timeline -- along with other computer / developer themed stuff. Hence my question to you guys.

Humor is a cross-cultural social lubricant. And yet it is subjective. Weird.

AFAIK this whole thing was kicked off by an known alt-right troll but tripped up a bunch of reactionary idiots (as designed) which put THE FEAR into Disney's legal department. Funnily enough RLM called this years ago and posted a kinda funny video just the other day: https://youtu.be/WvrA0ydf8y8

Our instructor was Gerry Schenk and he has a bitchin' avatar :D

LOL wow I had no idea he is STILL at NAIT. He was already 4 years when he taught US. (Gotta admit tho, that uncommon twitter name, being so similar interests... spooky)
