So after having great success with our Steam Deck I decided I should try Linux as my desktop at home as for the most part 99% of what I do on my home PC is browsing and steam games.

After loading up a few of the most popular distros or failing to load up some of the popular distros I have settled on CachyOS for now.

1. Easy to get all the latest HW acceleration including H.265 in browsers
2. Can seemingly install anything, not limited to a narrow package manager.
3. Has a DEEP wiki, which is where I found out that my MB chipset has a SLEEP state bug and they included a complete workaround in the wiki.. (had entered sleep hanging the system in EVERY distro I tested and found the answer in the Arch Wiki
4. limine boot loader with brfs file system means I can boot into previous OS snapshots easily if I mess the whole system up as well.

Going to try and use this is my home daily driver for a while and see how it goes.

was super bummed that SLEEP of all things was causing the system to completely hang in all distros, I always seems to have the strangest luck with hardware compatibility.

If interested I have a B550 chipset motherboard

Was impressed with the arch wiki, both in the fact my issue was covered but also that it clearly documented how to test, confirm, and workaround the issue clearly enough without jumping details.

Man, that's awesome! I have been considering making the switch but there's lack of support for my tablet and Clip Studio which I use almost daily

Will have to see if I run into any more obstacles CachyOS is strange, it is based on Arch which frankly is a HARD bleeding edge distro where the community doesn't seem to like hand holding or wizards much.

CachyOS is like lets use the bleeding edge distro but make it FASTER and easier for gaming and other things.

Did a quick google and found some tutorials for Clip Studio on linux but probably not going to "RECOMEND" anything..

Again before even going down this path it was more that 99% of what I use my home computer for is webbased now and everything I have been playing works on steam / proton at the moment.

Haven't gone through any time with this new setup yet to find issues.

I did install A LOT of distros just to pop in and see what everything looked like these days.. have to say linux mint is super polished, ubuntus current default desktop environment feels a little alien. Nobara also seems like a strong contender.

Of note I specifically wanted to run "Google" Chome not chromium or firefox and I wanted to be SURE it supported h.265 in the browser for plex and for my modern 4k security cameras.. Oddly enough that is NOT a commonly working thing in most distros. Some have the codec packs easily available however getting a browser to use them is more steps, installing the google version of chrome can even be more steps in some of them.

You do take some risk but the Arch User Repository (AUR) is available to you on CachyOS, you just have to know that it is a USER packaging system so you need to take a little care if you are outside the official / vetted patchages. However this means that chances are good someone else has already pachages "what ever" it is you want to run.
