I think the thing that made Google successful period, is that the other search engines had become cluddered with junk. Google came along and with a new approach clear through the mess. Now Google has become a huge collection just as Yahoo, Excite, Altavista, etc were then. Want to make a ton of money, invest in a new search engine that comes along that does to Google, what Google did to the others before it because it's ripe to be taken down.

I don't believe that the cluttered sites of the hellish "portal" era were using the quick-loading, easy-to-ignore "tabs" interface that Google uses. IMHO Google ain't nearly as bad (and never will be) as the other guys were back then. :)

True, but I find myself using other search engines a lot more these days.  As other search engines enhance and optimize it would seem that Google has stayed pretty stationary.

Perhaps cuz Google is all about empowering folks to access the world's data? And not just letting them find it through a keyword search? ;)

Fascinating article, just finished reading it. Made me think of something folks like Brian Tracy and Jim Rohn often say...

Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity.

Now I gotta read the article's "cousin" -- "Google is an exciting company...maybe too exciting for its own good. In fact, the problem with Google is that it has too many Purple Cows...

PS: If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all. - that was an awesome Futurama episode. :)

So Google wants to allow access to all the data, but not find any of it?  Interesting.

What other search engines do you use/recommend?  And how do you optimize your searches for them?
Prayin' for a 20!

gcc thorin.c -pedantic -o Thorin
compile successful

I just use the same keywords as i do in Google and cross reference.  Nothing all that serious.

Ive been using ask.com a lot but I use alltheweb.com and Live.com as well.

Google documentary/exposee: "Behind the Screen" (5 parts)

^ compare that to this...
:o Google's Master Plan: free access to all info? or *controlled* access to it? :o
