QuoteThe Most Outlandish Computer Comparison Ever!

Bloat. If you think that Americans are getting fatter, take one good look at the operating system (OS) your computer is running right now. It gets larger and more weighed down with every update. We are in the third decade of global personal computing, and have we really progressed that far?

It is funny to look at this and see how much better things used to be for some tasks.

Darren Dirt

I still miss, and have fond memories of, the Golden Age when I was programming stuff on my Atari ST with GFA BASIC (including compiler!) and the average 50-100K of text code (structured basic, like a line-less hybrid of BASIC and Pascal/ModulaII) would compiled to like a few hundred K and be possible to store on a single floppy. And I could create "sprites" by modifying the character set (changing pixel-by-pixel each character that I wasn't using for normal text/number displaying). And you could do "peeks" and "pokes" into low-level stuff that would do fancy stuff...

Now it's all about including libraries and DLL and class definitions and whatnot. With 5 layers of abstraction between you the coder and the OS. *sigh*
