First Impressions:

After I cut my teeth on Portal last weekend I downloaded and installed Bioshock.

Let me tell you, the game setting and overall execution tickle me exactly the right way. I mean for me this is like being able to step into some of my favourite movies (Metropolis, Sky Captain, Indiana Jones, The Black Hole) so likely I'm going to be FAR more forgiving than if it was a Resident Evil or Silent Hill type game.

Bioshock is set in 1960, the main character (you) is travelling over the Atlantic ocean when suddenly the aircraft you are in crashes into the sea. Somehow you survive the accident and find yourself "saved" by an odd lighthouse smack in the middle of nowhere. You enter the lighthouse only to find that it is the gateway to an incredible underwater city.

You soon discover that all is not well in this city when you are immediately attacked by a clearly unstable person, but fear not there is at least one person who wants to help you get out of this sunken madhouse alive.

I won't get any further into the story than that but basically your job is to somehow find your way outta this crazy place and hopefully save some people along the way.

I've only played for about an hour and so far I'm very happy with this game. The graphics are well done and the sound engineering is top notch. The whole experience is very immersing and very creepy. The game play is good, but I have to say that even though I have tutorial mode "on" there are gameplay elements that require the manual to at least understand / control.

You pick up weapons, ammo and health packs by looting bodies / finding stuff around you on the ground (or buying it from vending machines). You also find special drugs (plasmids) that give you superhuman abilities. I found the introduction to plasmids more than a bit contrived (I mean, you find yourself in an underwater art-deco retro-futureistic city filled with mutants, why not just randomly stab yourself with a glowing syringe).

As I said before so far so good, I am really looking forward to progressing in the game and hopefully by the time I hit the 7 hour mark the game will still have me in it's clutches so that I finish it.

Otherwise it's back to Vice City for me :D
