Stumbled onto this while perusing Wikipedia today:

John's Phone is a mobile phone developed by From the Supermarket. It claims to be the world?s most basic cell phone, allowing the user only to make and receive calls, with none of the features of modern cameraphones such as a camera, Internet access and text messaging; the address book is a paper pad and a pen, built into the back of the device. It is built around the Keep It Simple concept. It was developed by Dutch design studio John Doe Amsterdam. It is marketed as being ideal for children, the elderly, and technophobes.

A hundred bucks to buy a ten-year-old phone with pointy corners.  I guess the paper address book is a ... new? ... idea.

Well, I'm thinking these are produced by a small art design studio in the Netherlands and not a giant factory complex in China, that could factor into the cost.

It says "basic" not "cheap", oddly those concepts don't always intersect.
