MAD is only a deterrent to using nuclear intercontinental attack vectors (ICBMs, SLBMs, and the nuclear bombers).  The Russians and Americans had dozens of proxy wars, where they weren't the main country attacking or under attack but they certainly had allies on one side or the other that they gave weapons to.

The Danish, Norwegians, Russians, Americans, and Canadians are all trying to lay claim to as much of the Arctic as possible, as there is a firm belief that there are vast tracts of resources to be found there.  It's still not known if these resources truly exist, or even if it's economically feasible to extract them; nevertheless greed knows no bounds and countries may be willing to go to war over a few hundred more miles of underwater terrain.

It's crazy, really.  Anyone who's played Civilization or Freeciv knows that the poles have no resources!

if the US attacked us, Russia would probably declare war on US just to have an excuse to attack them...
